NWA-TNA Weekly PPV #42 (April 23, 2003)

Recap of Jarrett's ongoing paranoia, the issues between the Church and the extremists, and Watts' antagonizing, plus Jarrett's ongoing feud with Raven.

We go to Raven who's sat in a room lit only by candles, and we see the boots of who I assume are Julio and Laree. He quotes Changes by David Bowie and says Jarrett's reign is about to end, in 7 days, in 168 hours, 10080 minutes. He vows to achieve his birthright and become NWA Champion, and there's nothing Jarrett can do about it. He tells his followers that he needs the ultimate sacrifice from them tonight, to lay life and limb at his feet and do what needs to be done, set the stage for his ascendence to the throne. He says it'll be a glorious night and will lead them into next week. He says he's dropping the mother of all bombs on Jarrett and will make Hiroshima look small, and he will rise from the mushroom cloud like a phoenix from the ashes to achieve his destiny.

The only thing announced so far is Lynn vs Red for a shot at the X Division Title. We cut to Goldy who's outside with Glen and Sanders. Glen says he likes this look, it reminds him of the days of Above Average. Sanders says he's not conforming and that he has "it". Glen says people are calling him Below Average. The rest of SEX join them. Glen smacks Siaki in the face, he and Young butt heads. Glen yells at them to get ready and everyone but Sanders and Glen leave. Goldy screams as D'Lo and Styles attack and take things into the Asylum.

Mike Sanders & Glen Gilbertti vs D'Lo Brown & AJ Styles
Bell rings while they're still fighting in the crowd but they quickly take things to ringside, AJ and D'Lo have control. AJ takes Glen into the ring with stomps in the corner, Glen and Sanders are whipped into each other and hit with clotheslines in the back of the head. Sanders is kicked out while D'Lo hits a scoop slam, then scoop slams AJ onto Glen, then mounts with rights. AJ chokes Glen in the corner with his boot, then gets sent off the ropes, avoids a back drop and his a superkick. D'Lo tags in, D'Lo goes up top and hits a clothesline as AJ whips Glen toward him. Scoop slam and a leg drop by D'Lo for two.
AJ back in and they corner Glen for rights and chops, then sends him off the ropes into a heel kick for two. Glen counters an Irish whip to dropkick the knee, commentary have been mentioning AJ injured it in a match in Lafeyette. Sanders tags in, AJ avoids a clothesline, tries a kick but gets caught with a dragon screw. Sanders works the knee with some elbows then Glen is back in to work the knee some more. Russian leg sweep and an elbow from Glen gets two.
Sanders back in with a knee bar and AJ quickly makes the ropes. Glen in again, scoop slam by AJ, Glen off the middle rope misses an elbow. D'Lo gets the hot tag and in comes Sanders, rights and clotheslines, then a back drop on Sanders.D'Lo goes for mounted rights on Sanders in the corner, Glen cuts him off but AJ gets him with a German.  Sanders with a facebuster and a neckbreaker on D'Lo gets two. Sanders sent off the ropes, tries a tilt-a-whirl but gets countered with a sidewinder.
D'Lo goes up top and hits the frog splash, covers but Glen saves it. AJ gets booted in the knee and Glen tries the stunner but gets hit with the Sky High, covers and Sanders saves it. Sanders sent off the ropes, kicked in the back of the head by AJ from the apron, and D'Lo hits Glen with an enziguri. AJ goes up top and Sanders is sent to the floor. Triple X runs out for the DQ. (6:33) That was a good opener.

Red and Lynn run out to clear the ring. AJ is whooping Glen's ass in the crowd towards the SEX locker room. Lynn and Red hit Daniels with a variation of the Doomsday Device. Now Young and Siaki come out to clear them out.

Goldy is with Jarrett to address Raven. Jrrrett has no clue what Raven's on about nor does anyone. He makes a Slapnuts reference and a reference to ECW and vows to go beyond Raven's sickest thoughts tonight. Watts interrupts and tries to preach peace and love and Jarrett isn't having his bullshit. Watts says Raven is a madman so he brought a straightjacket. He vows to put it on Raven if he won't listen to reason. Jarrett says Watts is going to get himself killed and it'll be the best thing for him.

Over to commentary to talk about the rest of the show. Along with Red vs Lynn, AMW will face XXX for a tag title shot, plus something called an Ultimate Sin Match from the mind of James Mitchell, who will explain what this match is later on.

Goldy is in the back where Chris Harris has been laid out.

Speaking of which, Triple X are here for the contender's match, and again this week it's Skipper and Daniels. Skipper gets a mic to apologize to their fans now that there won't be a match. He calls themselves the #1 contenders because Storm isn't crazy enough to face them. Only for Storm to come out anyways.

NWA World Tag Team Championships #1 Contenders Match: XXX vs James Storm & Chris Harris(?)
Storm holds his own and Daniels tosses him over the ropes, skins the cat, avoids a baseball slide from Daniels and back drops Skipper out onto him. Storm follows with a flip dive onto them. Storm slingshots Daniels into the ring and takes him to the corner for chops, the across the ring into a clothesline on the rebound. Daniels sent off the ropes into a back drop and a dropkick for two.
Daniels avoids a clothesline with a boot to the gut and in comes Skipper. Arm drags by Storm before tossing Skipper to the floor, then knocks Daniels off the apron. Skipper misses a clothesline and eats a kick to the side of the head, covers, Daniels tries to break it with an elbow but hits Skipper instead. Daniels tossed back to the floor and Storm hits a forearm off the ropes for two. Storm caught with a kick from Daniels coming off the ropes and Skipper follows with a belly to belly to take control.
Daniels back in, Storm sent off the ropes into a clothesline, then face first into Skipper's boot. Skipper back in with stomps in the corner, Daniels in again to keep stomping Storm down. Skipper in to keep it going. Storm fights back, comes off the ropes with a crossbody for two, then caught with a double-underhook suplex. Daniels in again, Storm sent off the ropes into a dropkick for two, then some vicious rights. Skipper in again with a spin kick to the gut. Storm fights back, comes off the ropes, caught on the shoulder of Skipper for Daniels to come off the top with an elbow.
Harris comes out now, Daniels covers for two. Daniels latches on a headlock, Storm fights out, comes off the ropes and there's a double clothesline. Storm tries to make the hot tag but Skipper knocks Harris off the apron into the guard rail. Daniels and Skipper with a neckbreaker/double sledge combo gets two. Storm sent off the ropes, tries a backslide, Skipper floats over but eats a superkick. Harris gets the hot tag but it's behind the ref's back. Storm sent off the ropes, avoids a double back drop, hits a bulldog and a Fameasser on Skipper and Daniels at the same time.
Harris gets the hot tag this time with rights and lefts, then sent off the ropes to hit a flying lariat. Full nelson slam to Skipper gets two. Harris sent off the ropes into a popup Flatliner for two. Skipper with a slingshot crossbody for two after Storm saves it. Daniels avoids a scoop slam, then Storm does, brfore an inverted tornado DDT for two. Storm tries to go up top but Skipper dropkicks him off to the floor. Harris mounts Skipper in the corner for rights, but he's caught with a back suplex/elbow combo. BME from Daniels gets a near fall.
Daniels lifts Harris up in a suplex to set up a crossbody from Skipper but Harris rolls into a small package for two, Skipper missing and hitting the mat. Skipper accidentally takes out Daniels and Harris rolls him up for two. Skipper sent off the ropes, avoids a back drop, springboards and gets speared midair, only for Daniels to break up the pin attempt. Harris goes for the Catatonic but while the ref is getting Storm out of the ring Daniels gets him with a low blow, Skipper rolls through into a small package for the win. (11;07) Another excellent match.

Storm helps Harris back up only to leave on his own.

Goldy is backstage with Laree, who's looking for Jarrett. She intends to rip off his ballsack and put it down Goldy's throat. Then implies she slept with Jarrett. Laree continues looking and finds the ticket lady we've seen before. Laree shoves her against the wall until Jarrett headlocks her, throws her into the wall and hits her in the head with a trash can. Laree sent face first off a chair as they go to the parking lot, she goes face first into the back of a truck, before tossing her into it. I have no words.

Erik Watts comes to commentary looking for Raven and reiterates his plan. Don believes his sincerity, Tenay calls it bullshit.

Cut a pre-tape Father Mitchell in the Asylum, in the ring in red light. He talks about sin, and how it started with Eve eating the apple in the Garden of Eden, but he calls that amateur hour. His Church likes their sins larger than that, which brings us to the Ultimate Sin Match. His Disciples, Lee, Slash and Awesome face the so-called Team Extreme of Sandman, New Jack and Saturn, who were foolish enough to agree to this match. He gives us a tour of the ring: ropes wrapped in barbed wire, barbed wire which he proves is barbed wire by raking a fruit across it repeatedly; trash cans where they plan on dumping what's left of the extremists' broken bodies; a kendo stick hung from a pole, which Sandman may like, unless he slips and gives himself the vasectomy him and his wife have been talking about; tables; and finally a ladder, to climb and grab a baseball bat hanging above the ring. He says his Church is going to end the myth of their extreme brotherhood, their world of extreme wrestling is over, they're in his world where winning, losing, life and death are meaningless, and pain is God.

Ultimate Sin Match: Disciples of the New Church (w/ Father James Mitchell) vs Team Extreme
Pre-Match: I don't know what the point of bringing in Justin Credible was if he's not even in this match. Also I need to note that  every now and then you'll here Tenay reference TNA Extreme, which I guess is their branding for this kind of stuff.
Immediately Jack has hid little sickle and takes it to the head of Slash, then a fork and he's bleeding tons. Saturn throws the ladder down on Awesome. Lee and Sandman are fighting on the floor. Jack gets a staple gun but Slash avoids it, using it to stable a dollar bill to the head of New Jack. Saturn with a German on Awesome in the ring, and another. Sandman opens a beer and hits Lee in the head with it. Slash with a trash can to the head of New Jack. Trash lid to the head of Saturn by Awesome, then Awesome is kicked into the barbed wire, then dropped onto it with a front suplex.
Saturn goes up for the kendo stick but he's cut off by Lee, then Awesome hits him int he back with a trash can. Awesome Bomb through a trash can. Sandman goes up top and takes down the kendo stick to nail Awesome in the head, then repeatedly across the back and body, then to the head of Lee. Lee throws a trash can at his head. Saturn nails Lee in the head with a can. Awesome cracks Saturn with a kendo stick. Jack with an elbow on Slash on the ramp. Saturn with a stick assisted Russian leg sweep on Lee. Awesome sets up a table across the apron and guard rail. Spin kick by Saturn on Lee in the ring. Awesome with a trash can to the head of Sandman. Jack and Lee are fighting by a table, Saturn does some kinda move on Slash, makes the first pin attempt for two.
Saturn with some kind of move the camera misses on Slash in the ring. Awesome with a sitout powerbomb off the apron through a table on Sandman. New Jack lays Lee on a table, Saturn comes off the top to put him through with a table. New Jack apparently is also bleeding from something. Jack has a chair and goes up top and nails Slash in the head, covers but it only gets two. Jack sets the ladder up and goes for the bat but Slash pushes the ladder over, putting him through a table at ringside. Now Slash goes for the bat but the lights go out and Justin Credible has appeared atop the ladder with him. Saturn hits Slash with a sitout powerbomb. Credible gets the bat down and jumps off the ladder to hit Slash in the head with it, Saturn covers for the win. (9:35) I liked some spots but this just a bullshit hardcore match, no psychology or any real logical producing of it at all.

Everyone but Sandman celebrates, he's writhing on the floor.

Cut to a video package, first hyping Trinity, then going over the issues between her and Kash.

Tenay brings out Kash for an interview and try and get answers, he calls Kash gutless for leaving Trinity to get laid out. Kash says that's just his opinion, one he doesn't agree with and is sure his fans wouldn't either. He says he's the one that discovered her, completely ignoring the fact she came in with Divine Storm originally, says she doesn't have a contract with TNA, she has a contract with him, which means she does what he says when he says it, he owns her. So here she comes now. She starts to stand up for herself and he smacks her in the face. She slaps him across the face. He kicks Tenay out of the ring and calls for a ref.

Kid Kash (NWA X Division Champion) vs Trinity
Trinity's already laying in rights before the ref arrives, then comes off the ropes to hit a tilt-a-whirl headscissor. Trinity sent off the ropes, slips through the legs and trips him up. Trinity with a go-behind, tries a roll ip, Kash grabs the ropes but gets caught with a sunset flip for two. Kash elevated to the apron and eats a roundhouse to the floor. Trinity hits the moonsault off the top Trinity with chops to the chest and back only to be whipped into the guard rail and have a chair thrown into her face.
Kash with chops now and a knee to the gut. Back in the ring, springboard elbow and a cover but Kash pulls her off the mat. Trinity tries to mount a comeback but gets a spinning neckbreaker, then a fisherman's neckbreaker, another cover and pulls her up again. Shoulder blocks in the corner before Trinity's sent across the ring, avoids a splash, goes back up with a corkscrew moonsault for two before running into a lariat, then another cover but she kicks out this time.
Trinity sent off the ropes, popped up and hits a hurricanrana. Sent off the ropes again, avoids a back drop only because they screw something up. Then she tries a double springboard into a hurricanrana, but they also mess that up and there's a ref bump. Now Sanders and the Harris Twins are here, but they hit the H Bomb on Kash this time, before pulling Trinity on top for the win. (6:37) That was a surprisingly good match until the ref bump, and then the finish is real confusing. Why are SEX getting involved?

Goldy is outside the Church locker room, we hear arguing, and Slash still bleeding storms out with Mitchell yelling at him. Couldn't hear a word of what was said and that's it. OK then.

Shark Boy comes out for a match but Slash comes out holding a dagger and hits an inverted DDT on the ramp. Slash holds Borash hostage with the dagger to pick a fight with Credible, who then pops up from behind and attacks with a kendo stick to the back then head, now we have a referee.

Justin Credible vs Slash
Stick assisted Russian leg sweep, then Credible sent to the corner, flips over to the apron and gets rammed off into the guard rail. Slash with a flip dive to the floor, then throws Credible off the stage into a guard rail. Short-arm clothesline from Slash, then he gets caught with a powerslam. Slash sent into the guard rail back at ringside, then again, then the ring steps. Credible dropkicks Slash into the ring post back and head first, then tries again only to be countered and catapulted into it.
Slash with a chair to the back before taking it back to the ring, then Credible sent chest first into the corner. Slash goes for his inverted DDT but Credible hits a low blow. Credible goes for a tombstone but Slash fights out of it to hit the spinning crucifix bomb. Slash up top eats a superkick midair. Credible gets his kendo stick again and nails Slash in the head with it, and again. Slash throws powder in his face and cracks Credible twice in the head, before using it to clothesline Credible to the floor over the ropes.
Slash wails on Credible through the crowd outside the Asylum in the parking lot. Slash gets one more shot in before Saturn and New Jack round the corner, they eat kendo stick too. He hits Credible again, now for some reason this is too much and the referee calls for the bell. (4:33) I was actually really enjoying that, for once a hardcore match on TNA that felt like it had some structure to it, and then it just ends?

Then Sandman rounds the corner to hit Slash with a flaming kendo stick from behind. Then Awesome rounds the corner. Mitchell and security rush out to try and separate them but Sandman goes after everyone with the flaming kendo stick until the flames die out. What the fuck am I watching?

Now Erik Watts is out with the straightjacket because sure why not? He hasn't found Raven after looking around the Asylum and Nashville, he's dumbfounded because you can only buy eyeliner from so many places. He doesn't care where Raven might be, he needs Raven to come out for a talk.
Eventually Raven's music hits but it's Julio that comes out. Watts tries to preach peace and love, but starts to make fun of the name Julio, at least for someone who's supposed to be a Raven crony, then tells him to grab Raven. Julio tries to attack but he just gets some lariats and a chokeslam for his troubles. Watts is sent face first into the corner and eats a spin kick to the face..
Watts sent to the corner, then catches Julio in a hurricanrana attempt to powerbomb him into the buckles. Alexis is here now and hits a low blow before delivering a right and a kick, Julio mounts with rights. Alexis chokes and Julio goes looking under the ring for something, finally finding and pulling out a table. Julio comes off the middle rope with an elbow. Jarrett comes out as they try to set up the table, hits Alexis with a DDT, then hits the Stroke on Julio. Jarrett finishes setting up the table and puts Julio on it. Jarrett goes to the middle rope and Alexis cuts him off. She tries a hurricanrana but powerbombs her through Julio and the table. Jarrett leaves the Asylum. I'm so confused at this point.

Video package of Red and Lynn's history.

NWA X Division Championship #1 Contender's Match: Amazing Red vs Jerry Lynn
Konnan on commentary.
A handshake starts the match before they exchange a series of holds and pin attempts. Konnan spends most of this time shitting on Lynn for not wrestling more Mexicans and gives Red some credit because he's Puerto Rican, and when Don starts talking back Konnan threatens to make him dance like the slut he is in a stripper cage. Eventually Lynn catches Red with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for two. Back suplex by Lynn gets two. Lynn gets Red in a half-crab, Red eventually makes the ropes.
Red sent off the ropes, hooks his arms and lurews Lynn into a drop toe hold to set up the 718, but Lynn ducks and clotheslines Red to the floor. Red returns to the apron and avoids a suplex in, off the ropes, Lynn counters a Code Red but gets caught with a dropkick. Red flups to the apron and hits a hurricanrana sending Lynn into the guard rail. Red is sent into the guard rail, then gets a boot up and delivers another hurricanrana. Back in the ring, Red covers for two. Lynn sent to the corner, Red gets him with a dropkick and a spinning heel kick for two.
Surfboard by Red. Lynn fights out and turns it into a backslide for two, then Red follows with a clothesline for two. Red sent to the corner, elevates Lynn to the corner, avoids a shoulder block, but then Red avoids a leg drop, Lynn hitting the apron to the floor. Red tries a baseball slide but gets caught and dropped onto the guard rail. Red rammed back first into the apron before taking it back to the ring for two. Red sent to the corner, Red floats over, tries a sunset flip, Lynn blocks, but Red turns it into a Code Red for a near fall.
Red sent to the corner, tries to float over, then avoids a powerslam, Lynn catches a dropkick and tries to catapult Red into the corner, but pulls himself up to the middle rope. Red tries a hurricanrana but Lynn turns it into a sitout powerbomb for two. Red avoids a TKO and turns it into a small package for two. Red tries to do the cradle piledriver but Lynn counters with an air raid crash for a near fall. Lynn tries for the cradle piledriver but Red flips out and hits a spin kick. Red goes up top but Lynn cuts him off, Red backflips over Lynn but takes out the ref.
Red charges and Lynn moves out of the way, Red going shoulder first into the ring post and tumbles to the floor. Ron Killings appears to hit a gordbuster on Lynn for some reason, then tells Konnan they need to talk, so they head to the back. Red hits the Infrared for the win. (14:08) That was a really good match even despite the screwy finish.

Lynn and Red shake hands despite how things ended.

Goldy is backstage with Watts, she doesn't think he's sincere in his quest to help Jarrett. He says Jarrett helping him was as big as the first moon walk. Then brings her on his search for Raven while imitating Elmer Fudd. Watts opens a door and sure enough he finds Raven, who proceeds to whoop his ass, hitting the Raven Effect into a chair. Raven asks him where Jarrett is.

Over to commentary who recap how we got to Raven vs Jarrett, who fight for the NWA Title next week, then we go to a video package.

Jarrett is back and finds Raven in the same room Watts did. Raven attacks with a mop and has the straightjacket, now Jarrett takes control of things. Jarrett throws a chair into his face, then Raven sends him face first off the steps as they come to ringside. Raven into the guard rail, then a chair across Raven's back. Into the ring, chair to the head of Raven, then Jarrett starts to put on the straightjacket, using a few chair shots to help subdue him.
Now the lights go out. Suddenly Team Extreme are in the ring, Jarrett nails Credible and New Jack in the head with a chair, Sandman blocks a chair shot with his kendo stick, Jarrett gets caught with the Raven Effect. They put Jarrett in the straightjacket now, then they wrap a coil of barbed wire around him. Well Sandman just kinda stands there, everyone else does the work. Jarrett is hung upside down over the ropes and Jarrett lays into him witht he kendo stick, then Credible and Saturn powerbomb him. I'm so fucking confused.
