NWA-TNA Weekly PPV #41 (April 16, 2003)
Recap package of last week: the ladder match between Dusty and Lawler that ended with Koloff handing the belt to Dusty, just for Lawler to steal the belt back; tension within AMW; Styles beating Gilebertti with feet on the ropes and Gilbertti attacking the ref; David Young attacking Athena to join SEX; Saturn beating FKA Bart Gunn; Raven beating Kid Kash despite help from Trinity and misogyny from Kash; and Jarrett laying out Dusty with a chair due to his paranoia. We also shots of him laying out D'Lo with a chair for some reason.
Announced for the show, we have XXX defending the tag titles against Lynn and Red, plus we're promised answers regarding AMW. Dusty is shown waiting in the parking lot for Jarrett.
Raven is with Julio and Laree in the stands with a mic. He says this is a revolution of the damned and calls the other two his apostles. He says their strength lies in the fact they worship at his altar, his brilliance, they recognize him as the deity that he is. He tells Jarrett that he and SEX are tired of his efforts to turn the company into a circa-1980s "wrasslin'" promotion of his youth, where good guys wore white and bad guys had mustaches and stole candy from babies. When he became a man, he says he threw away his childhood possessions and is offended Jarrett won't do the same. He says that the first step in taking away Jeff's power is to take his title, and coincidentally, Raven's destiny since childhood has been to win that title, saying that fate can be a cruel mistress. As far as Jarrett's sanity, he says he takes one step closer to ending up in a padded room each week, and as someone who's been held against his will by men in white coats, Raven assures that it's not a good time. He says that D'Lo will be a victim of the Raven Effect tonight.
Raven (w/ Alexis Laree & Julio Deneiro) vs D'Lo Brown
Quick exchange to start the match with D'Lo taking Raven down with a shoulder block. Another quick exchange, Raven this time with a shoulder block. Another exchange, D'Lo takes control with a hip toss and clotheslines Raven to the floor. D'Lo with a baseball slide, then dives over the ropes taking out both Raven and Julio. Back in the ring, D'Lo delivers rights, then gets sent off the ropes, avoids a back drop but gets sent out to the floor with a drop toe hold. D'Lo pulled back in driven down with a knee from the middle rope for two. D'Lo sent to the corner, caught with a clothesline and a knee lift off the rebound. Raven calls for the Evenflow but D'Lo counters with a Twist of Fate.
D'Lo with some rights, then off the ropes with a series of clotheslines and a scoop slam, followed by a leg drop for two. Raven with some rights only to get caught with a Side Effect, then D'Lo goes up top, hits the Lo Down while Laree distracts the ref. Julio slides in, hits a superkick, Raven rolls up D'Lo but it only gets two. D'Lo sent to the corner, ducks a clothesline then accidentally nails a side kick on the ref as the camera catches Julio taking something out of his pocket. D'Lo gets a waistlock, but gets led tot he ropes allowing Julio to throw powder in his eyes. Laree runs in but gets hit with the Sky High. Julio gets hit with a Sidewinder and D'lo tries pins on both of them thinking they're Raven. Raven hits the Evenflow to win. (5:56) Too many shenanigans but a decent match before that.
Raven helps Laree back to the SEX locker room with Julio by their side.
Now we get a video package for Raven vs Jarrett in two weeks.
Over to commentary to run down the rest of the card: we know of XXX vs Lynn and Red, but we also have a sitdown interview between Tenay and AMW, Gilbertti vs Styles in a Street Fight, and Sanders vs Kash for the X-Division Title.
Goldy is in the SEX locker room. Gilbertti says it's their night. Sanders vows to bring the X Division Title home, there's something happening with Siaki and Young too but they don't elaborate, Gilbertti hypes up XX. Gilbertti says all AJ did was beat him in a wrasslin' match last week, says AJ has no time to do that "MTV Jackass X Division flying crap." The Harris Twins are just kinda standing there, Glen tells Ron to wrap a towel he has around his hand and hit him. Ron throws a week shot, Glen smacks him in the face and wants a real punch, it takes two more to get him worked up.
Falls Count Anywhere Street Match: Glen Gilbertti vs AJ Styles
Pre-Match: I have to point out this is exactly as Borash announces this, a "Street Match," and I don't know why. I will give them some credit though, both are out in street clothes, which is always nice to see in a Street Fight.
Both trade blows to start, AJ takes control with a German before laying in more boots and rights. Glen gets shoved in the corner but bounces back woth a clothesline, before knocking AJ to the floor. AJ bounced face first off a box used for the cameramen, then sent into the ring steps, then over the rail into the crowd. AJ sent shoulder first into the handrail along the stands, then again. AJ blocks a hip toss and throws Glen into the side of the atands back first. AJ knocks the SEX locker room door open and Sadners gets a shot in before AJ is thrown into the side of the stands. AJ is busted open for some reason, Glen takes it toward the stage with rights and elbows, AJ ducks a clothesline and nails a superkick.
Low blow is back up with a low blow and calls for a powerbomb on the concrete but AJ fights out to hit a snap suplex instead. Sanders is back with rights on AJ but D'Lo is here to even it up, take Sanders elsewhere. For some reason referees hold D'Lo back. Sanders gets back ringside and AJ jumps over the guard rail to take him out. Back in the ring, AJ hits a pumphandle gutbusterthen a snap side suplex. AJ back out of the ring grabs a chair as Glen retreats to the corner, acvoids a chair shot, AJ sent off the apron, tries a stunner but gets sent off the ropes into a spin kick.
AJ wedges the chair in the corner, Glen trips and tries to catapult but AJ grabs the ropes to stop himself going into it, before sending Glen face first into it. AJ grabs the chair again and cracks him over the back with it. AJ tries another chair shot but Glen hits a stunner, sending AJ throat first into the top edge of the chair to get the win. (7:50) It's one thing to have Glen win it's another for this to be what feels like a glorified squash, AJ got his ass handed to him 90% of this match. That was shit.
Goldy goes to the locker room to get a word from Dusty, who's still waiting for Jarrett. She tries to ask what Dusty intends to say but he says what it is is for Jarrett's ears only. He understands the pressure and what Jeff's going through because he's been there. He says there's nothing more prestigious than wearing that title. They're briefly interrupted by the arrival of Eric Watts who says Dusty is the man. Dusty takes offense to the fact that Eric is hanging around celebs instead of training his craft and calls himself the baddest outlaw. He says Watts is standing in his greatness9 and steals Bret Hart's catchphrase. He says Watts is not on his list of people to talk to, nor is he on Dusty's shelf of things to grab. Watts throws his bag at the back of Dusty's head as he turns away and security rush in . Watts pulls out Ric Flair's title belt and goes to nail Dusty until Goldy screeches and he holds back.
Pre-Match: Kash gets a mic. He tells Trinity that he went back and watched the interview the two of them had with Tenay last week, says he's embarrassed and ashamed of how he acted, and admits she was a part of him winning and holding the title. He says he'll be there for her if she really wants to wrestle like she has for him He apologizes and gives her a kiss and she seems to accept the apology.
Sanders gets in Trinity's face allowing Kash to attack, then get sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline and delivers a hurricanrana. Arm drag and a hip toss before Sanders is clotheslined to the floor. Sanders piefaces Trinity before returning to the ring, then counters an Irish whip, dropping Kash face first on the buckle. Kash counters an Irish whip with an arm drag, then gets elevated in the corner, tries a hurricanrana but gets countered with a sidewalk slam for two, then another cover for two.
Snapmare and a penalty kick from Sanders, followed by a series of elbows gets two, then another cover for two. Kash is pulled over the apron for some elbows and a chop across the chest, into another cover in the ring for two, and another cover for two. Sanders sent to the corner, Kash tries to follow with a bulldog but Sanders has it scouted with a clothesline for two. Kash sent off the ropes, gets a sunset flip for two, and they trade some pin attempts before taking each other out with a double clothesline.
Trinity goes up top but gets crotched and shoved to the floor by Sanders. Wheelbarrow spinebuster by Sanders gets two. Kash sent tot he corner, goes to the middle rope and hits a corkscrew moonsault for two. Kash sent off the ropes, avoids a slam but gets dropkicked in the knee. Kash distracts the referee acting injured allowing Trinity to hit a crossbody from the top on Sanders. Roundhouse kick and a moonsault from the top connects. Kash springboards and tries a hurricanrana but eats a powerbomb, but kicks out at two, then another cover for two. Sanders sent off the ropes, tripped by Trinity and Kash hits an enziguri. Coast-to-coast dropkick gets the win, though the camera completely misses Sanders getting his foot on the rope and Trinity pushing it off. (7:10) Decent match.
Harris Twins rush out from the back and Kash makes a quick escape, leaving Trinity prone to a triple team. Kash leaves despite getting a chance to save her and she gets an H-Bomb.
Goldy is in the back with the New Church, bringing up how their match with New Jack and Sandman was a bloody massacre last week, and asks where things go from here. Mitchell agrees while also calling it a cookout, referring to the fireball. He calls the two a homicidal maniac and a stinking lush, and he admires their personalities,. He's still salty that Sandman rejected his offer a few weeks back and that's why he was the victim of the fireball. He says Saturn is responsible for costing him a drinking partner, says he blew so much smoke up Sandman's ass about extreme bullshit it's a wonder he doesn't have colon cancer. He says he has a surprise for Saturn tonight to prove that being extreme blood brothers means nothing, that extreme blood can be manipulated, bought, chemically altered. He's gone into Saturn's backyard to find the dragon that will eat his flesh.
Saturn vs Mike Awesome (w/ Father James Mitchell)

Awesome goes for the Awesome Bomb again and Saturn escapes again, nailing a superkick for two. Alabama Slam from Awesome who goes up top again for a splash for two. Awesome calls for the Awesome Bomb through the table but Sandman and New Jack run out for the DQ. (7:56) Awesome seemed gassed or something most of this match. It was fine but there were a lot of mistimgs or spots that just looked bad.
Slash and Brian Lee run out shortly after, the New Church clearing the ring.
Goldy is in the back with Jarrett who for some reason is tossing out various things from a trailer. Goldy is screaming, Jeff says he's lost his mind and calls for a ring crew.
Off to the sitdown interview between Tenay and AMW. Harris says they and most out there think they're the most dominant team in the company, but Tenay points out they don't seem to be on the same page lately. He brings up Harris being in singles action and asks for clarity. Harris says they won't keep them from being on the same page, points out that many tag teams have had singles matches and stayed together. Storm has a singles match of some kind tonight and Harris says he'll support his partner.
Tennay wants to know why Harris was in the SEX locker room. Harris says business is business, he says he was just showing respect to guys he just wrestled, even though there are times he wants to take their heads off. Storm cuts in and points out you shouldn't be hanging out with the people you're trying to take titles from, calling them the enemy in the ring. Harris emphasizes the "in the ring" part and doesn't see anything wrong with having a beer with those same people outside the ring. He emphasizes Storm needs to trust him and tells him not to make a big deal.
Goldy is with in the SEX locker roo with Siaki, Desire and David Young, the latter who's up against Storm, but she wants answers about his attack on Athena last week first. Siaki cuts in and says it's none of her business, and the more important thing is David's match with the John Wayne wannabe. She brings up that Siaki was apparently supposed to be in this match originally. He says he's not wrestling a nobody with the schedule he has and says he's a corporation, which makes Goldy crack up. David finally gets a word in and vows to spinebuster storm through the mat. Siaki cuts him off and makes fun of his southern accent, comparing him to the Beverly Hillbillies and tells him to let him do the talking.
David Young (w/ Sonny Siaki & Desire) vs James Storm
Quick exchanges to start, Storm getting the upperhand both times. Storm sent over the ropes skins the cat to avoid a baseball slide followed by a crossbody. Storm with a hurricanrana on the ramp before he's sent into the guard rail, then runs into a powerslam. Back in the ring Young covers for two. Storm mounts a comeback until Siaki catches him from the apron, allowing Young to hit a discus clothesline off the distraction. Storm sent off the ropes into a dropkick for two. Storm avoids a roundhouse and a leg sweep to nail Young in the side of the head.
Storm back again corners Young with boots to the chest, who gets the boots up, rolls up top and gets his legs kicked out from under him. Frankensteiner by Storm gets two. Young sent off the ropes into a swinging neckbreaker, then Storm goes up top with a crossbody but Young rolls through for two. Storm counters an Irish whip for the 8-Second Ride and a cover but Siaki pulls the ref out. Storm goes for the ride again, Desire slips in with a low blow, Young hits the spinebuster to win. (5:54) An OK match.
Recap video of the issues between the New Church and the extemists.
Sandman is playing chess with New Jack when Goldy comes up for an interview, she asks if the two are on the same page after last week. Sandman reiterates that they're extreme brothers and have been doing this for ten yrears, cutting, slicing and dicing people up, with canes, beers, and rambles about blood types? He says extreme is the thickest blood there is. New Jack says they don't care about winning or losing, they just wanna beat the hell out of someone. He just wants to dive off the highest point and smash their ass through a table. He doesn't want a belt because he'll just pawn it. He says the Church is going to hell and they're finishing what they started. Also apparently New Jack is in check and what follows is check puns and an argument. New Jack leaves and Sandman busts himself open with a beer can.
Disciples of the New Church (w/ Father James Mitchell) vs Sandman & New Jack
Sandman leaves New Jack to fight for himself while he goes out into the crowd. New Jack fares alright until he's cornered for a double team. Sandman eventually joins them and the extremists take control. Frankensteiner by Sandman on Slash while Jack and Brian fight on the floor. Sandman with a front suplex onto the top rope, goes up top with a dropkick. Jack goes face first off the announce table, then Lee is whipped into the guard rail. Slash lays Jack on the table he set up earlier on the floor, goes up top but Sandman cracks him with the kendo stick. Sandman goes to have a beer but Mitchell distracts and Lee hits a big boot. Mitchell starts driving a spike into Sandman's head.
Now Perry Saturn is here only to be tossed to the floor. Jack goes up top with a chair and cracks Slash over the head with it. Jack covers but Awesome runs out to break it up. Saturn and Lee fight ont he floor and Awesome Awesome Bomb's Jack out of the ring through the table. Jack is rolled back in and Slash covers for the win. (6:20)
And for some reason they play Sandman's Enter Sandman ripoff theme. Lights go out and now Justin Credible is here to crack everyone with a kendo stick, clearing the Church from the ring.
Goldy is with Jarrett again and he's making plans of some kind with the crew? Watts appears and Jarrett lobs a trash can at his head but misses. Watts leaves.

Daniels retreats and tags in Skipper, while Lynn tags in Red, we get another quick exchange ending in a stand off as Red lands on his feet off a German. Another quick exchange, Red takes control again with a headscissor, then the 718. Daniels is tagged in and catches a springboard,, Red slips out and comes off the ropes into an octopus stretch but Skipper quickly breaks it up. Daniels goes up again as Skipper goes maybe sets up for a Doomsday Device, but Lynn turns it into a catapult that crotches Daniels on the top rope. Lynn catches Skipper with a jackknife pin to win the titles. (14:18) I loved the match but I question the finish, it seemed dumb to have the mystery luchador interfere if Triple X were gonna lose the titles anyways.
Triple X immediately attack after the match. Jarrett runs out to take out Triple X with a trash can lid. He gets a mic while the crew start setting up the ring and he basically challenges Laree and Deneiro to a Clockwork Orange House of Fun Match. Laree comes out with a trash can lid but Jarrett blocks her attack and hits her instead, then nails Julio too, and a second time and a third time. Julio sent face first off an an equipment case then gets chairs thrown at him.
Clockwork Orange House of Fun Match: Jeff Jarrett (NWA World Heavyweight Champion) vs Alexis Laree & Julio Dinero
Bell is rung while Laree and Julio take control while they're fighting through the crowd. I think this is a handicap match? It's not really made all that clear. Laree nails Jarrett in the head with a trash lid before making their way to ringside. Crew just finishes setting up the ring as they do and Laree comes off the steps with a lid shot. Into the ring Julio gets a kendo stick and cracks Jarrett over the back and Laree lays in with baseball bat shots. Laree laid across the table, then a chair to the head of Julio before laying him on top of Laree, then another trash can shot. Jarrett goes up top but Raven nails him with a trash lid, then sacrifices his apostles as he superplexes Jarrett through them and the table. Julio climbs on top for the win. (6:13) I mean this was pretty shit, and the ref bump was made pointless. Even setting aside the No DQ rules, there was no pin attempt made while the ref was out.
Raven hits the Evenflow DDT just to add insult to injury.
