NWA-TNA Weekly PPV #9 (August 14, 2002)

We start with reminding us Truth winning the NWA Title last week.

Over to the arena as Truth makes his way out. He says that from this point on, the fans are in attendance, and it's called the TNA Asylum, like it or not. He says he became a legend last week, he came to NWA a very bitter man with good reason, wasn't sure he was going to get the opportunities he was supposed to. He says the color of his skin has always made it difficult for him to compete. He brings up his time in WWF and says he was told by a "senior official" that he couldn't make the same mistakes as everyone else because he's a black man in a white man's world. He says he's a black man in a man's world, so from here on, he's a damn legend.
When he's given an opportunity he's going to do what he does best, knock the duff off someone's ass.
Eventually he's interrupted by Jarrett. He calls Truth Walt Disney and tells him to put his dreams away, because Jarrett is his worst nightmare. He can't believe the bullshit coming out of Truth's mouth, and the only reason he's standing in the ring and Jarrett is on the ramp is as plain as the color of his skin, and claims reverse discrimination once again. Truth says the only SOB left standing in the ring with their hand raised was himself, Jarrett doesn't deny that Truth beat Shamrock, that he's the new NWA Champion, but the difference is Truth was given his opportunity, and he's been robbed week after week. All he wants tonight is the opportunity he deserves a the NWA Title. Truth says when he came to TNA he and Jarrett became good friends, and they both know what goes on behind the curtains and in the ring is business, so he tells Jarrett to come get the belt.
Instead they get Behrens backed by security and Bullet Bob. He calls himself the new sheriff in town and calls him slap nuts, says he's back with a vengeance. Steamboat can't be there tonight and says Truth and Jarrett can brawl all over the building for all he cares, but it won't be sanctioned by the NWA, and if they do the match, he doesn't care what they do, it won't be for the NWA Title. Jarrett threatens Behrens but security gets between them, then Brian Lawler attacks Jarrett from behind. Lawler laying into him at ringside over to commentary, then up the ramp. Brian tries to take a chair from a fan but they won't give it to him and security finally intervene, then try to hold him and Jarrett apart. Brian just keeps yelling "I know it was you" at Jarrett, whatever the hell that means. Commentary don't know what he's talking about either.

Over to commentary now to talk about tonight's show. Truth and Jarrett are still challenging Lynn and AJ for the Tag Titles, and apparently we'll see footage of something that happened between AJ and Lynn earlier in the day.  Plus Low Ki with his first X Division Title defense against the Flying Elvises in a four-way elimination match.

Kid Kash, Shark Boy & Slim J vs The Spanish Announce Team
Pre-Match: Slim J apparently a representative of NWA Wildside, only 17 years old. He looks like an Eminem ripoff.
Kash and Jose start this match. We have some chain wrestling to start, then some back and forth, then they slap each other. Then Jose offers a handshake and Kash flips him off. Joel tags in and runs into a drop toe hold, then some more back and forth and a monkey flip from Joel, Kash sent off the ropes, sends Joel over the ropes to the floor, then springboard dropkicked off the apron. Slingshot hurricanrana from Kash. Jose and Shark Boy in the ring now, Jose sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline, then hits a suicide dive onto Kash on the outside. Shark Boy slingshots onto Joel. Now Slim and Red in the ring, Slim sent off the ropes, exchange of counters, then a nice tilt-a-whirl headscissor from Slim. Slim up top with a moonsault onto the Maximos and Shark Boy on the floor. Red with a tope onto all of them, then Kash with a springboard front flip onto all of them. Kash now with Jose return to the ring, Kash with a slingshot leg drop and a cover for two.
Kash with a surfboard hold, then some rights before tagging Slim in. Kash with a slam, then he sidewalk slams Slim onto Jose. Standing corkscrew splash from Slim misses, then Jose gets him up in the rack, Joel with a double stomp from the top, then Red with one, into a botched seated senton onto Kash. Jose sets up Slim for a Romero special, then Shark Boy is caught with a drop toe hold onto Slim, for Jose to put him in a Boston crab, while Joel applies a camel clutch on Slim, only for Red to hit a running dropkick into Slim's face. Jose makes the cover but only gets two.
Red tags in. Red sent into the corner, gets a boot up, misses a sunset flip from the middle rope as Slim goes up top with a Whisper in the Wind. Kash back in. Scoop slam by Slim, then a standing moonsault with assist from Kash. Kash with some weird powerbomb from a piledriver position, then an elbow and a cover for two. Kash sent to the corner, sends Red to the apron, who goes up top, only to be caught with a t-bone from the top. Kash covers but Joel makes the save.
Slim back in. Snapmare to Red, then a step-up enziguri before going up top and misses a Phoenix Splash. Maximos back in. Everyone's in the ring now. Shark Boy, Slim and Red whipped into each other from the corners. Jose sends Kash off the ropes, who double springboards into a hurricanrana. Kash off the ropes with a tornado DDT, cover but Red breaks it up. Slim sent into the guard rail. Red sent to the corner, gets a boot up and hits something like a spinning STO from the middle rope, covers but Shark Boy breaks it up. Shark Boy sent to the corner, gets a boot up, hits a flip-over stunner from the middle rope called the Explosion and covers but Joel breaks it up. Shark Boy tossed out to the floor. Kash hits Red with a double underhook piledriver and covers but Joel breaks it up with a leg drop from the top. Slim sent off the ropes but hits a swinging neckbreaker. Slim up top but Shark Boy is sent into him and he gets crotched. Spanish Fly from the Maximos to Slim. Infrared onto Slim for the win in 10:37. I mean what is there to say? This match was awesome.

Goldilocks is backstage with the Dupps, minus Fluff, and she tells them to back off before they start the interview. They're also standing in front of a porta potty. Stan says they defended her honor last week on Disco's show, and thinks it's time she know how they felt. Bo turns to their outhouse and brings up MTV's Cribs, and might start their own show called Shitters. Apparently it belonged to their grandmother who died in her rocking chair, preserved for five years. Sigh.

Now Bruce comes out, Miss TNA. Bruce says he loves the people, and have made his reign beautiful. What he has beneath his gown makes him more woman than any in the world, including Tenay's wife or any of the hobags in the arena. But they can only dream about having his beauty, his poise, and grace, and now, all the married men in the world and in the arena, including Tenay, are secretly fantasizing what they could do to him if they had the chance. He's just too hot. We have a bleeped "You suck dick" chant as Bruce has a proposition for the women in the crowd, for the fat cows who think they can pin him, and take his crown, he'll even write them a $5000 cheque. He understands it's more than any of the hussies make on a Nashville street corner on any given night, but he opens it up to any takers. He says they have to have more than one tooth. He's also not afraid to slap some old lady. There's some woman in the front row and Borash has her sign a release before she hops the guard rail.

Miss TNA Crown: Bruce (c) vs Some random lady from the crowd
$5,000 also on the line.
Pre-Match: She doesn't even get a name, so I don't know what to call her. Apparently her name is Tina Hamilton, but I can't find any information on her, she doesn't even have a listing on Cagematch.
She hits a pretty good spear though, then a scoop slam and they blur out underneath his gown. She hits a leg drop. Bruce tries to retreat, then he's sent over the ropes to the floor. Scoop slam onto the floor, then back in the ring. Bruce tries to retreat again and she pulls him back in, Another scoop slam, then a third is countered with a small package, so Bruce retains in 1:51. The crowd was actually kinda into this and she did pretty well for her part, so there's that.

Bruce puts his tiara back on.

Goldy is backstage with Jarrett. She brings up his title match tonight but asks what he did to Lawler. Jarrett denies doing anything, doesn't know what crawled up his ass, but he's going to deal with him on his own time. Then he moves onto Truth, says they're not buddies, friends, they're only partners because he's been forced into this match. He says he's going to keep breathing down his neck because Truth is wearing his belt, and will keep playing this game until the belt's around his waist. He makes it clear he's not taking crap from anyone. Then he finds Behrens in the bathroom nearby in the stall, speaking of crap. Jarrett shoves him into the wall and says he'll be part of the wall if he tries to upstage him again. Low Ki enters and gets in his face but Jarrett keeps walking. A little person bumps into Bo and says they'll settle it in the ring.

Break

Dupp Cup Invitational: TEO vs Bo Dupp (c) (w/ Stan Dupp)
Pre-Match: They've put the porta potty on the stage. You'll remember putting your opponents head in the toilet, filled with crap or not, will get you points. God I hate this.
TEO using the middle rope for a low blow as Bo gets in the ring. TEO also with a low blow to Borash so that's 2.5 points already. TEO tosses in a chair and a cookie sheet from fans, sheet to the head of Bo and the chair for a point each, so TEO's at 4.5. TEO gets the hobby horse and Bo pulls his pants down to take it, but gets a low blow instead. TEO chases after Stan before he grabs a drink from someone. Bo somehow loses 5 points for Stan screaming like a pussy, so it's 2.5 to -5 for TEO. Big boot by Bo, then a standing splash.
Bo leaves the ring and grabs a pan and a toilet seat and a chair from the audience. Pan to the face of TEO, then toilet seat to the ribs, then a chair to the head. 2.5 to -2 for TEO. Stan hands a board to a fan, who then hands it to Bo, who lays it against the turnbuckles, TEO getting whipped through it for another point. Stan pinches Don West's ass, who's been doing commentary on live mic, so now we're tied 2.5 each I think. Stan tries to go after the ticket lady but she attacks him with the broom again. TEO is tossed out to the floor. TEO is dragged up the ramp to the outhouse, but waiting inside is Puppet, who attacks Bo with a kendo stick. Bo's head gets dunked in the hole and... wait the match is over? I mean I'm glad it is, but the outhouse/toilet dunk doesn't get you an automatic win, but uh... TEO wins the Dupp Cup in 4:27 I guess. I still hate this.

Puppet has apparently chased Stan out of the arena as TEO holds up the Cup. Still to come, apparently Monty and Elix are scheduled for a Detroit Street Fight, plus the X Division championship 4 way with the Elvises, and the tag title match with two dysfunctional tag teams.

Break

We get a package of Brown and Skipper's history starting 3 weeks back in a tag match. We'll remember that Elix set him up to be attacked by Truth with his belt. Then Brown laid him out the next week. Then Brown was attacked with paint the next week and called yellow.

Detroit Street Fight: "Primetime" Elix Skipper vs Monty Brown
Pre-Match: Elix gets a mic and says this is his house, and as far as he's concerned Monty doesn't belong there, Elix didn't give him permission to come out. He begs Monty to bring his chickenshit ass out so he can throw him out the doors. Elix then tries to ambush him on the stage, but Brown comes out from behind to get this started. Also they're actually starting in street clothes, so already this is off to a good start.
Brown mounts with rights after laying in some boots, then Elix is rolled down the ramp. This is also falls count anywhere.  Elix tries to fight back only to get beat down, then he's gorilla pressed through the ropes into the ring. More boots by Brown, then uses his shirt to choke Elix, then hanging him over the top rope with it, letting him drop to the floor.  They've placed some trash cans and a stop sign on the floor. Elix finds a chain in one of them and nails Brown in the ribs as he comes off the apron. Elix chokes him with the chain, using the steps for leverage before sending Brown into the guard rail. Elix tosses the stop sign into the ring before pulling a bigger chain out from under the ring, then the cans are tossed into the ring. Forearm by Brown takes him down before returning to the ring. Brown tosses in a trash lid but Elix nails him in the back with it as he enters the ring. Lid to the ribs then back again, then the chest. Elix covers for two.
Brown sent off the ropes, tries a crossbody, Elix ducks with a Matrix move and he lands ribs first on a trash can, rolling out of the ring. Elix with a trash can to the ribs, then back in the ring for a corkscrew plancha, sandwiching Brown under the trash can. Elix covers but it only gets two. Back to the ring, Elix gets the stop sign and nails Brown in the head, then gets it punched back into his face. Then Brown with a powerslam into a Rock Bottom, or the Alpha-lution(?). Alpha Bomb onto a trash can for the win in 5:45. Way too short.

Goldy is in the back with the Elvises. Estrada and Yang are talking to her, while Siaki has his back turned behind her. Estrada says there are mixed emotions among themselves, then he points out the black armbands they have on, for the 25th anniversary of Elvis' death. Estrada goes on, says it's weird, but they understand that they're professionals and are given the same opportunity, and team or no team they need to step up and take advantage of the opportunity. Yang starts yammering on and Siaki cuts him off. He reminds us Elvis died on the toilet reading a Burger King flyer. He says their team has been about one thing, that being himself, calls himself the bloodline of the Elvises, the heartbeat, he IS the Flying Elvises. He says they're paying tribute to a pizza, buffet eating pill popper who's daughter has been married so many times that Elvis would be rolling in his grave, that is if the fat ass could roll. He says if they're gonna idolize anyone, if the kids watching wanna look up to someone, it should be him.

Fatal 4 Way Elimination Match for the NWA X Division Championship: Low Ki (c) vs Sonny Siaki vs Jorge Estrada vs Jimmy Yang
So this is four corners, tag in/tag out riles it seems, with Low Ki and Siaki starting it off. Low Ki backed into the corner, then launched up and across the ring only to land on his feet. Low Ki shoved to his back, then a kick to the side of Siaki's head and some chops. Kick to the top of the head, then Siaki catches him as he goes for a cartwheel kick in the corner, sending Ki down with a powerbomb. Cover for two. Siaki lays in the boots, then Estrada tas himself in. Running shooting star and a cover for two by Estrada.
Ki chopped against the ropes, then some for Estrada, who sends Ki off the ropes into a rolling senton, or the Trip to Graceland. Then he tries a springboard moonsault but Ki gets his boots up high to block it. Kicks to the chest of Estrada, then the side of the head and a cover for two. Ki sent to the corner, sends Estrada to the apron, then ties him up in a dragon sleeper in the ropes. Siaki breaks it up. Ki gets it applied on Siaki in a piggyback but Siaki falls back to break the hold. Springboard moonsault by Estrada and a cover and Siaki breaks it up.
Yang tags in. Leg lariat and some boots, then he's sent to the corner, gets Ki with an elbow, spinning heel kick from the middle rope from Yang. Trading shots now, then Yang sent to the corner. Yang gets a boot up and hangs over the top rope with a headscissor until the ref forces a break. Ki sent off the ropes and caught with a sleeper, but hits a back suplex. Ki tags in Estrada for a back and forth until Yang is dropkicked out of the ring. Springboard corkscrew from Estrada to the floor. Back in the ring to the corner, Yang springs up off a tornado DDT and hits a dropkick. Yang sent off the ropes, avoids a dropkick, and Estrada caught in a nasty looking Boston crab for an immediate tap out. Ki with a kick to the ribs of Yang, then he's sent to the corner and hit with a clothesline. Yang to the top rope with a missile dropkick and a cover for two. Backbreaker by Yang, then he goes up top only to be crotched by Siaki from the apron. Ki Crusher to Yang and now he's eliminated.
Siaki attacks from behind, now Ki sent off the ropes, popped up into a Samoan  drop and a cover for two. Ki sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline and turn each other inside out with a pair of clotheslines. Ki with some rights, then sent off the ropes and hits a forearm. Springboard kick to the side of the head, then the chest kicks to Siaki. Siaki ducks the head kick and hits an uppercut, then off the ropes only to be nailed in the back of the head by Yang from the apron, allowing Ki to get the roll p and retain in 9:32. I'm tired of this thing with the Elvises but it was a good match.

Now to footage from earlier in the day where Goldy is looking to get a word with Lynn before he goes to take care of something, so she and the camera hop into his car with him. She brings up concerns after last week with him and AJ, with having to defend their tag titles, but he says they're professionals, they're gonna get the job done when it comes to those titles. Last week was every man for himself.  Now they've arrived at where AJ is... somewhere, and Lynn attacks him. AJ gets the crap beat out of him and ends up laid out in a bathtub, Lynn yelling about respect.

Break

Sigh. More Disco. He gave Paulina the night off because there won't be any problems tonight, because his guest isn't a wrestler. He has a legitimate movie star, from one of the most famous families in Hollywood, Dean Baldwin...? Apparently this is Shark Boy without his mask.
Dean says he's loving it there, puts over the X Division, Styles, Lynn, himself. Disco asks what Hollywood thinks of the Dupps and their Cup... or not. Then he brings up Goldy and Dean says he knows plenty about her, but Disco tells him to save it. Dean's in Nashville working on a project, Pearl Harbour 2... oh he's joking, it's called Urban Heartthrobs, starring Frank Stallone, Carrot Top. Then he sends well wishes to Jason Priestly. None of the other Baldwins will be in the movie. Disco wants to know if Alec ever talks about what he does in bed with Kim Basinger, and more importantly if she's a screamer. Dean wants to talk about his movie. Disco wants more dirt on Kim and Alec.
I have never been more happy to see Brian Lawler to end this. He doesn't give a shit about Disco or the show or Dean, he cares about Jarrett and what he's guilty of. Dean takes the mic back and asks who he is and what his credentials are, how many movies he's been in, he thinks Brian wants an autograph, but he won't give on. Lawler sucker punches him, then wrecks Disco's set. Security come out to take him away. We see Lawler getting dragged and thrown out of the arena.

Back to Goldy with the Dupps backstage, with... uh... I don't know, whichever one is Trevor Murdoch, throws a hissy fit and says he's never coming back and yells some gibberish. The other one is trying to talk him out of it and get help from Goldy but he leaves.

Break

NWA World Tag Team Championships: Jeff Jarrett & Ron "the Truth" Killing (NWA World Heavyweight Champion) vs Jerry Lynn & AJ Styles (c)
Jarrett and Truth attack Lynn before he even gets to the ring, before tossing him in. AJ hasn't come out yet as Lynn is sent off the ropes into double back elbows. Rights to Lynn in the corner then boots by Truth, followed by a double team suplex. AJ finally comes out and goes after Jarrett, then an enziguri to Truth. AJ ducks Lynn as he hits Jarrett with a clothesline, then Truth is back dropped out to the floor, and Lynn hits a crossbody. AJ sends Jarrett off the ropes into a dropkick, then a slingshot corkscrew into a cover for two.
AJ sent off the ropes, hangs on and hits a drop toe hold. Jarrett rolls out and AJ hits an Asai moonsault. Lynn and Truth fighting on the other side of the ring before returning to the ring while AJ nad Jarrett keep going. AJ whipped upside down into the guard rail while Lynn is sent off the ropes, hooks himself to the top rope and ducks a side kick from Truth. AJ dropped ribs first on the guard rail by Jarrett. Truth face first in the corner, then Lynn sent across the ring, goes up and over Truth while Styles goes face first off the steps, Truth caught with a monkey flip. Jarrett whipped into the guard rail while Lynn hits a bulldog from the middle rope and covers Truth but Jarrett breaks it up.
AJ tries to clothesline Lynn but he ducks and Jarrett gets hit instead. Truth sent off the ropes, kicks both, misses a clothesline to AJ who goes for a springboard moonsault, bonks heads with Lynn upside down as Truth moves out of the way. Order is restored as Jarrett is tagged in, with Lynn as the legal man for his team. Lynn draped over the middle rope before Jarrett drops himself over his back. Soop slam by Jarrett and a cover for two. Truth back in. with some boots. Wheelbarrow into a facebuster by Truth and a cover for two. Lynn starts to fight back and delivers boots in the corner, only to be sent across the ring, then gets Truth with a roll up for two. Jarett has the ref occupied allowing Truth to hit a low blow followed by an ax kick, then a cover but only gets two.
Jarrett back in knocks AJ off the apron, then some rights and knees to Lynn. Lynn avoids the Stroke, then Jarrett sent off the ropes into a sleeper. Jarrett reverses with one of his own but he's countered with a shin breaker, followed by a figure 4 but Jarrett reverses immediately. Lynn makes it to the ropes. Truth back in. Scoop slam and a cover on Lynn for two. Lynn fighting back again with some rights, then Truth sent into the corner, rolls under a clothesline and hits a dropkick, covering for two. Lynn set on the top rope, but he catches Truth with a tornado DDT.
AJ gets the hot tag and in comes Jarrett. Spin kick to Jarrett, then some kicks to the thighs and sides. Jarrett catches one and ets a heel kick. Jarrett sent off the ropes, tries a sunset flip, AJ rolls through and goes for the Clash but Truth makes the save. Lynn takes Truth out with a clothesline. Jarrett sent off the ropes, drop toe hold by Lynn, rolling somersault by AJ into a cover but Truth saves. AJ and Lynn try something resembling a springboard Hart Attack but AJ fucks up the springboard. AJ covers but Jarrett breaks it up.
AJ sent off the ropes, flips over Jarrett, tries to tackle Jarrett but he leap frogs and AJ takes out the ref. Lynn sent off the ropes, Lynn avoids a slam and hits an inverted DDT. Cover is made but the ref is still down. Truth rries a slam but Lynn avoids and hits the cradle piledriver. Lynn makes the cover and the ref is still out, and Jarrett breaks it up. Jarrett hits Lynn with the Stroke, while AJ hits the Spiral Tap on Truth as the ref is waking up. AJ and Jarrett make simultaneous covers, a second ref comes out for simultaneous counts, and we have a double pinfall in 12:24. This was a pretty good main event. And the non finish kinda makes some sense here considering Truth is the world champion.

We have the referees arguing, then Bob Armstrong makes his way out with a mic. The belts are being held up until further notice. As for Truth, he announces he'll be defending against Monty Brown on next week's show. For Lynn and Styles, they'll face off next week to earn a shot at the X Division Title. Lynn takes the mic and says he wants to kick AJ's ass all over the arena and suggest they make it Falls Count Anywhere. AJ takes a mic and suggests they take it a step up and have a No DQ Match.... Uh, huh? Bob compromises and says they'll have a Best 2 of 3 Match, and as decided by the NWA, the third will be an Ironman Match, 10 min time limit.
Jarrett is trying to steal the tag belts and is tired of getting screwed, after fighting for weeks to get his title shot. So Bob has a surprise for him next week, says Jarrett better lace his boots up tight for a bumpy ride. Jarrett runs tot he back with one of the tag belts as Bob and referees chase him to the back.

Over to commentary to recap things, and Don runs down the card for next week:
- 3 Stages of Hell #1 Contender's Match for the NWA X Division Championship: Jerry Lynn vs AJ Styles Fall 1: Falls Count Anywhere. Fall 2: No DQ. Fall 3: 10 min Ironman Match.
- Four Corners Elimination Match for the NWA X Division Championship: Low Ki (c) vs Amazing Red vs Joel Maximo vs Jose Maximo
- Best 2 out of 3 Falls Match: Sonny Siaki vs Jimmy Yang
- NWA World Heavyweight Championship: Ron "the Truth" Killings (c) vs Monty Brown
- Jeff Jarrett vs Mystery Opponent

Looks like a hell of a show.

Then to the back, Jarrett is arguing with Bob and the referees and tries to leave the building, but Lawler bursts through the doors and pins Jarrett to the wall by the throat, screaming he knows what he did and he's gonna kill him to end the show.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Well you had two good X Division Matches and a decent main event, with an alright finish, but now we have vacant titles again. Dupp Cupp was the usual shit but it looks like we're done with that now. And the Miss TNA crap I could do without. So it wasn't a terrible show. With a run time of 1:40:20, this show had a total 44:36 of wrestling.
**Side Note: Apparently the original airing of this show had Malice vs Don Harris in a Last Man Standing Match, but it's been removed due to... well, this.
