NWA-TNA Weekly PPV #8 (August 7, 2002)
Goldilocks is backstage with the Dupps and Apolo, apparently it's just outside Steamboat's office. Tenay also tells us he's done a special interview with Apolo that'll air later on. But for now, we start with a match:
The Spanish Announce Team (Amazing Red, Joel & Jose Maximo) vs The Flying Elvises
Big brawl between all six to start, the Elvises take control. Red and Siaki are left in the ring as the other four fight on the outside and Red hits a pair of spin kicks, only to be turned inside out with a clothesline. Red sent off the ropes into a Samoan drop by Siaki and Red rolls out to the floor. Joel now alone in the ring with the Elvises and sent to the corner, sends Estrada out to the apron, only to be whipped into Siaki by Yang for a flapjack. Split-legged moonsault by Estrada and a cover for two.
Joel rolls out and in comes Jose, who eats a triple sitout powerbomb. Red back in as Jose is tossed out to the floor. Red sent off the ropes, through the ropes, pops up with a dropkick, only to be backdropped to the floor onto his own partners by Siaki. Estrada and Yang pose and Siaki sends them away. Siaki takes Joel into the ring and Yang tries to tag but Siaki brushes them off. Joel sent off the ropes for a rolling neckbreaker. Siaki brushes off his partners again and covers Joel for two.
Yang and Estrada leave the apron as Joel hits a spinebuster, then catapults him into a boot from Red from the apron, who slingshots into a double stomp onto Siaki, then Jose with a slingshot leg drop. Estrada and Yang have joined commentary while Jose puts Estrada in a chinlock, and Jose comes off the ropes with a dropkick to the face. Jose covers for two. Snapmare by Jose and a stomp, then Red tags in. Siaki tripped to the amt and Red with a standing shooting star into a cover for two. Joel back in. Siaki sent off the ropes and turned inside out with a clothesline, Joel covers for two.
Siaki sent off the ropes while Jose tags in, double drop toe hold. Romero hold by Joel, plus a dragon sleeper by Jose, while Red goes up top with a double footstomp onto Siaki, what they call the SAT Stretch apparently. Joel covers but only gets two. Red back in. Scoop slam by Joel, Red off the ropes with an elbow and a cover for two. Boots in the corner by Red, then counters an Irish whip and hits a pumphandle suplex. Yang gets back on the apron as Siaki covers for two. Siaki brushes him off again as Red is sent into the corner, avoids a splash and kicks Siaki in the back of his head. Overhead toss by Joel as Yang goes back on commentary and Joel covers for two.
Red in again. Siaki sent off the ropes and botches a spinning heel kick sell, then off the ropes again and catches Red with an uppercut. Cover on Red for two.Red sent to the corner, sends Siaki to the apron, then Siaki up top and eats a heel kick to the side of the head. Maximos go up top with the Spanish fly double team. Red goes up top with the Infrared corkscrew moonsault and makes the cover, but Yang and Estrada break it up.
All six fighting again. Estrada gets Red with a headscissor, then Yang avoids a double clothesline to hit a double dropkick on the Maximos, then they're clotheslined out to the floor. Yang launches off Estradas back onto the Maximos. Code Red to Estrada but Yang breaks it up. Red sent off the ropes and goes for a sunset flip but Yang drops down or a pin but the Maximos break it up. Yang sent off the ropes for.... well he and the Maximos botch some kind of double team. Piledriver by Jose, then the Maximos go for the Spanish Fly on Estrada, but he counters with a double DDT from the top. Red with a basement dropkick to Estrada and turned inside out with a spin kick from Yang. Yang and Estrada with a leg drop and a splash from opposite corners. Yang and Estrada waste time posing like idiots so Siaki makes the pin for the win in 11:45. Ignoring this dumb storyline with the Elvises it was a fun, fast-paced match.
Siaki leaves on his own.
Over to commentary to tell us about the triple main event set for tonight: Jeff Jarrett vs Apolo, AJ defends the X Division Title against Low Ki and Jerry Lynn, and Shamrock defends the NWA Title against K-Krush/Ron Killings/whatever he's going by.
Now time for Tenay's interview with Apolo from earlier in the day. Tenay tries to get some background on him for those watching who don't know much about him, but Apolo wants to get right to the point. So Tenay gets to the point, he brings up how Apolo is undefeated in singles action, with big wins over Malice and Lawler, and now he's been overlooked and leapfrogged by Steamboat and Killings. Apolo says that respect is everything in his country, that once you earn someone's respect you have it for life, says that he once respected Steamboat for what he's done for the business, but Steamboat lost that respect last week. He says he worked too hard to become #1 contender and now Steamboat's changed it, so he's going to take matters into his own hands, he's worked too hard for too long to let some corrupt individual to get in his way, and he wants Steamboat to tell him to his face why he took his title shot away. Apolo storms off.
Goldi is in the back to catch up with Apolo outside Steamboat's office, just as AJ leaves it. Steamboat comes out. Apolo tries to talk to him but Steamboat says he's a busy guy and that they'll talk when he's ready, and then he leaves. Now the Dupps follow after Steamboat out a door, and Lynn charges through to attack AJ. They get into a fight throwing each other around, Lynn barely avoiding a chair to the head and they fight into the bathroom briefly. Finally security and Bob Armstrong break it up.
Break
Steamboat makes his way out and the Dupps follow him out. Steamboat gives them the go ahead to do whatever they wanna do, he's too busy to care. Steamboat joins commentary for this next match.
NWA World Heavyweight Championship: Ron "the Truth" Killings vs Ken Shamrock (c)
We get a bit of chain wrestling to start until Shamrock tries for a knee bar, and Truth grabs the bottom rope, only to be pulled away and Shamrock applies the hold. Truth gets the bottom rope again and forces a break.Shamrock sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline, ends up tripping but still hits a nice roundhouse. Snapmare into a triangle by Shamrock and Truth gets the bottom rope again. Truth face first in the corner and some body shots by Shamrock before he's esent across the ring, goes up and over and hits a side kick. Truth covers for one.
Snapmare by Truth into a rear chinlock. Shamrock fights out, off the ropes into a forearm, another cover by Truth for two this time. Shamrock sent of the ropes, rolls over like a sunset flip but gets the knee bar again, but Truth gets the bottom rope once more followed by a clothesline. Snapmare and a leg drop by Truth, then a cover for two. Shamrock sent to the corner and Truth mounts right hands, only to be planted with a sitout powerbomb. Shamrock is up first and delivers rights, then Truth sent off the ropes into a powerslam and a cover but only gets two. Truth sent off the ropes into a spin kick, then back off the ropes into a dropkick. Hurricanrana is... kinda botched and Shamrock applies the ankle lock but Truth quickly grabs onto the bottom rope to force a break. Then he's clotheslined out to the floor.
Mitchell, Malice and Slash have appeared near the entranceway. Truth sent into the ring steps. Now Don Harris comes around with a chair and goes after Mitchell and co. Monty Brown is out now as Shamrock delivers elbows across the chest of Truth on the apron. Truth with a suplex onto the floor after blocking one by Shamrock. Back in the ring, Shamrock takes back control with right hands, mounting with some more before applying an armbar. Truth isn't so quick to get to the ropes this time and Shamrock drives his leg down across Truth's face, then.... just releases the hold for some reason. Truth is back dropped over the ropes to the floor.
Now exchanging rights until Apolo rushes down and attacks Truth. Now Malice and Slash and Don and Monty all get involved. Apolo tries to get Truth with a superkick but he avoids it and Shamrock is nailed instead. Now for whatever reason Steamboat has left commentary to roll Shamrock into the ring while everyone else are fighting up the ramp, and Truth has rolled back in on his own. Truth hits a cutter to win the title in 9:20. So... it was an OK match. It was pretty sloppy in a lot of parts, Truth looked good, Shamrock looked... about as good as he's looked the last few times he's wrestled. I don't know why you needed a million guys interfering, or why Apolo didn't cause a DQ, or why Steamboat rolled Shamrock into the ring like he did, is he turning heel? It's a cool moment for Truth though.
Truth is in disbelief as he takes the belt, before celebrating. Commentary put him over big time among the greats, even bringing up how he's the first African-American to win the title.
Truth has left and Steamboat comes back out with a mic, calling out Apolo. Apolo makes his way back out and mouths off off mic. Steamboat admits he may have made a mistake last week and understand he wants a title shot, but says Apolo's been running around like a maniac and that he can't do that anymore. So Steamboat grants him his title shot, says he's earned it and deserved it.
Of course this brings out Jarrett. He says he's waited patiently the last seven weeks for his title shot, and week after week he's been passed by for some reason, but tonight the answer has become as white as his skin. He accuses Steamboat of reverse discrimination, that just because Jarrett's not a minority Steamboat has the right to pass him by and look over him. Steamboat is taken aback and Jarrett doubles down, and asks why guys like Apolo and Truth get title shots and not himself.
Steamboat says that the bullshit stops tonight. He says that if Apolo beats Jarrett tonight he'll give him the title shot, but if Jarrett wins he'll give Jarrett the Truth. He also announces that he'll be the special referee for the match. Jarrett is pleased with that because it means Steamboat is fair game.

Oh great, another edition of Jive... er, or not? There seems to be a blackboard with a cardboard sign for "JIVE TALKEN" on it as Disco makes his way out, rather than his usual set. Disco's upset obviously and out come the Dupps, minus Fluff. One has a hobbyhorse and the other a spittoon. Bo announces something called the Dupp Cup Invitational and explains that the cup, or spittoon, has been passed down from generations and booze and moonshine was drank out of it. They also have a kid named Roun Dupp apparently, who took his first crap in there. Then says that this will be the new hardcore division. Disco suggests Steamboat is retarded for allowing this. That's where the chalkboard comes in to explain the rules, it's a points based system apparently, first to 10 points wins:
- Put an opponent through a table: 2 1/2 points, 5 points for a burning table
- Put an opponent's head in the toilet: 2 1/2 points, 3 1/2 points if it has shit in it
- Pinch a woman's ass: 2 1/2 points, 3 1/2 points if it's a man
- If you hit Jeremy Borash or some ticket lady: 2 1/2 points
- Use a farm animal in any way: 2 1/2 points, beastiality implied
- Spank opponent's bare ass with the hobby horse: 2 1/2 points; -2 1/2 points if opponent likes it
- Introduce opponent to "Jay", whoever that is: 2 1/2 points
- Cry like a pussy: -5 points
- Stick opponent's head in cotton candy machine for one full rotation: automatic win (10 points)
Disco suggests adding points for taking and using something from a fan on an opponent, they agree for 1 point. Disco asks if they have an opponent, and Bo is mad at what he did to Goldi last week, and he rips off his shirt to show a picture of Goldilocks taped to his chest. Paulina comes out to get between them and Bo calls her Jack and the Beanstalk. Then they offer some pocket change, about 64 cents, for anyone to wrestle in the Dupp Cup. No one takes it. They talk to the hobby horse. Then they offer a night with Fluff, but they get to watch. Ed Ferrara of all people leaps from commentary.
Dupp Cup Invitational: Ed Ferrara vs Bo & Stan Dupp
Since Borash is already in the ring, Ed decks him for 2 1/2 points, then he goes back to commentary to pinch Don West's ass for another 3 1/2, so he's already up to 6 points. Now Borash attacks Ferrara only to be thrown over the guard rail. Also Don is now doing commentary on a live mic. The Dupps have joined Ed in the ring now. They try to sandwich him but he ducks and they collide with each other. Ferrara decks them until Bo gets him with a body block, then Stan with a leg drop and Bo with a splash. Stan gets a chair from a fan and... damn I was not expecting Ferrara to take an unprotected chair shot to the head, so the Dupps get a point. Bo hits him with a chair too, so it's 6-2 for Ferrara. He's dumped out to the floor.
Stan gets a boot from a fan and hits Ferrara, then Stan gets a drink from another fan and smashes it in Ferrara's face so it's 6-4. Then Bo gets a cane from a fan and nails Ed in the gut, 6-5. Bo goes for the ticket lady Stan they drags Ferrara back up to Disco. Bo goes backstage to grab "Jay." Oh it's a blowup doll, and he throws it crotch first into Ferrara's face, 6-7.5. Stan tries to go after the ticket lady and she attacks him with a broom. Pauline gets Bo with a low blow, then whacks him in the back of the head with the chalkboard, then again and again. Ferrara hits a decent spear on Stan at ringside before taking a chair from the crowd, nailing Stan in the head three times, 9-7.5 for Ferrara.
Back in the ring, low blow to Stan, then Ferrara grabs the hobby horse and spanks Stan's bare ass, but Stan likes it, so Ferrara loses 2.5 points, 6.5-7.5 for Ferrara. Then he breaks the horse head off Stan's back. Ferrara pulls out a table and slides it into the ring, sets it up, but he's slapped by Dupp and chokeslammed through it for 2.5. Dupps win in 5:50. I mean what can I even say about this?
Another sit-down interview from Tenay, this time with Monty Brown. He asks for some background much like he did for Apolo. He grew up in Michigan, was a three-sports star in high school, excelled in football obviously, did so again in university, all-american, graduated with honors, played for the Buffalo Bills, AFC Champion in his rookie year, moved onto New England, now his career's gone full circle sitting with Tenay.
Tenay wants to talk about his transition from the gridiron to the ring. Brown says the transition wasn't that difficult, went from being a small pro wrestler in a football player's body to being a pro wrestler, says he dives headfirst with everything he does. He says he was driving six hours back and forth every day for training, creating his opportunity and now it's paying off.
Tenay wants to know about the politics he may have faced in the NFL. Brown says there's politics in everything and he experienced them firsthand in the NFL, he wasn't a first round draft choice so he had fight, claw and scratch for everything he has, but didn't let it hold him down, he makes the most of his opportunities, says it's not about where you're from, it's where you're at. He says once he got there and started knocking helmets off, knocking earpads out they didn't care he was a free agent, he beat the politics physically and mentally.
Tenay brings up what Truth has been saying the last few weeks, about how "they" held him back and such and wants to know Brown's take on all of it. He doesn't like Truth and mocks him, calls him the Disgruntled One, Mr. Oppression and says his mind isn't right. Tenay tries to warn him about something before getting out of harm's way, Elix attacks him with a yellow paint can. Elix accuses him of kissing ass as he lays into him and calls him chicken.

First Blood Match: Malice (w/ Father James Mitchell) vs Don Harris
Malice tries to attack him on his way down the ramp but Don avoids it, only for Malice to take control and send him into the guard rail, then again and again. Malice gets a chair only to have it booted back in his face. Malice sent into the guard rail, then again before getting tossed over it. Malice back on the attack and nails Don over the back with a chair. Then Don with a chair to the head then the back. Fight continues through the crowd and goes face first off the guard rail. Don gets another chair and nails him in the head. Malice back on the attack and Don goes face first into the bleaches, before Malice lays into him with mounted rights. More rights by Malice.
They finally make their way back to the ramp with Malice trying for a powerbomb, but gets countered with a back body drop. Malice is thrown off the stage and goes face first off the guard rail. Slash appears from nowhere to attack and takes a screwdriver from his boot, only for Don to nail him with it again, twice, Slash knocked to the floor. Mitchell standing by with the Ark and Slash has been busted open. Don lays into him on the ramp until Malice comes back, Don rolled down the ramp.Slash tries to hold up Don for Mitchell to put his blood on, but Don hits a low blow on Slash and kicks the Ark out of Mitchell's hands. Malice attacks from behind and takes it back to the ring. Mitchell's got the Ark blood on his face. Malice sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline and runs into a side slam by Don. And... Don for some reason is bleeding so it's over in 6:34. It's not even explained what happened. Did something get fucked up here?
Malice continues to the attack and Slash nails Don in the head with a chair. Chokeslam by Malice. Mitchell gets on the mic. "Cursed are the weak for they shall inherit nothing."
Goldi is backstage trying to get a word from Taylor Vaughn, but Siaki interrupts looking for Steamboat. She hasn't seen him and he insists she say his name for some reason, then he makes a point to say he's left the interview before walking off. Now Bruce walks by and grabs her microphone as he walks into Taylor's dressing room. She calls him a homo and pins him to the wall, shoves him in the shower and wants her crown until a couple other ladies pull her off. Bruce says he'll face her in an Evening Gown Match tonight then leaves. Now AJ drags Low Ki in and hey beat the crap out of each other until broken up.

Apollo face first off the other set of steps and Jarrett breaks the count. Apolo dropped face first onto the steps again and Jarrett breaks the count again. Apolo's been cut open and he goes face first off the announce table. Jarrett tries to use a chair but Steamboat cuts him off, so he rolls into the ring and once again Steamboat rolls Apolo in too for reasons unknown. Jarrett stomping away and some rights in the corner. Apolo gets enraged and delivers chops in the corner, then Jarrett sent across the ring and avoids a splash. Apolo sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline and hits a bridging German, Jarrett gets the arm up to kick out, and Steamboat still counts 3 in 10:16. I actually really enjoyed this match, but uh... huh?
Jarrett gets his arm raised. Tenay explains that Apolo's shoulders were still down so he was pinned, and Steamboat explains this to Apolo though he's still pissed and Steamboat has security take him out. Now Steamboat turns his attention to Jarrett and is a man of his word, says he's going to give Truth to Jarrett, but he never said he'd give him an NWA Title match, which is true. He announces that Jarrett will instead team with Truth to challenge for the tag titles for next week. Jarrett goes after Steamboat with a chair and security rush back out with billy clubs. I am so confused, as much as I hate Jarrett, how is he the heel here?

Taylor sent off the ropes into a knee to the ribs. Bruce with a stalling suplex. Taylor face first in the corner repeatedly, then sent across the ring and he hits his facebuster. Bruce politely removes the gown for the win 2:07. Even for what it was it wasn't very good, Taylor was completely lost in there.
Bruce gets a mic and even though the fans are disappointed he won, he's going to make sure everyone's happy as he calls for his music. Bruce starts a strip tease and they blur his lower half. Again I ask, why?
I guess this is going to be a weekly thing where Don West goes into salesman mode. He hypes next week's tag title match and some merch.
Now onto the main event.
AJ stands back and let's Lynn and Ki lock up, then they go after Styles and send him off the ropes into a double flapjack. Pair of rights to AJ then they go back after each other. Ki blocks a German and rolls through into a dragon sleeper, then rolls over into the dragon clutch. Lynn tries to stop it with a boot but Ki releases the hold prematurely to catch it and shove Lynn back, now putting him in the dragon clutch. Lynn fights his way back up and counters with a DDT, makes the cover but Styles breaks it up.

Ki tries a cartwheel clothesline in the corner to Lynn but ends up hitting the ref instead. Lynn and AJ exchange shots and they backdrop Ki over the ropes to the floor. AJ sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline and take each other out with crossbodies, AJ rolling out to the floor. AJ grabs a chair and cracks Lynn over the head. AJ goes up top just as Ki rolls back in and makes the cover. Ref counts to 2, then AJ hits the Spiral Tap on the back of Lo-Ki, but his arm stays draped over Lynn so the ref keeps counting. So Lo-Ki wins the title in dubious fashion in 16:20. I hate to complain about this match after how awesome that was, but this ending drives me nuts. Even the fans are confused at first. Was it a botch or was this actually the finish?
AJ looks on in disbelief as Lo-Ki takes his title.
And of course we need more Jarrett. Cameras cut to the back as security is holding him back while Jarrett yells at someone about his title shot. We see he's yelling at Truth. Jarrett wants his title shot now and Truth is willing to give it to him.
But then we cut back to the ring where AJ is attacking Lynn. Lynn fights back and out to the floor while Jarrett is driven back to the arena by security, with Truth in tow. Security is holding back Truth as Jarrett taunts from the ring to end the show.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Well, one again the X Division matches were the highlights of this show. That and the Jarrett/Apolo match despite the confusing ending, and Steamboat booked as a heel even though he's supposed to be a babyface, and vice versa for Jarrett. Then there's the Dupp Cup, and the Evening Gown Match, and the First Blood Match. So it was a 50/50 show, but honestly there was enough good on it to make it at least tolerable. With a run time of 1:57:03, there was a total 1:02:12 of wrestling on this show.
