NWA-TNA Weekly PPV #3 (July 3, 2002)
We're now broadcasting form the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN for this edition of NWA-TNA. Tenay welcomes us to the show, joined by West and Ferrara. We're reminded that Sharmock will defend the NWA Title against Malice, and now Styles will defend his X Title against David Young. Plus, the one-night tournament to crown NWA World Tag Team Champions, and Hall teams with Brian Christopher to take on Jarrett and K-Krush in a non-tournament main event.
Tenay then introduces NWA President Jim Miller who has an important announcement to make. He wasn't able to make the first show because of a tour in Japan, has asked by TNA to look for talent and he feels he's found some great people to bring to TNA and has a little surprise for us tonight. First though he hands Tenay some kind of trophy and welcomes TNA to the NWA family. He says that during the 8 days he spent in Japan, he met a big Japanese guy, about 285 lbs, 6'4", and next week this man named Omaori will face the winner of Shamrock/Malice for the NWA Championship. Then they send it to Borash.
NWA World Tag Team Championship Tournament Semi-Final Match: "Cowboy" James Storm & Chris Harris vs The Johnsons (w/ Mortimer Plumtree)
Pre-Match: So looking into the NWA Tag Titles history in a bit of irony, they were held previously by the Shane Twins, who are playing the roles of the Johnsons, but were vacated at the request of TNA. Mortimer has a mic as he and the Johnsons come out. He says the stars are shining bright, the planets are in alignment, and a thousand events culminate in this very moment. He says it's a God-given divine right, and his two servants step in the ring, do his bidding, and guild him in gold or something like that. They play their music during his promo so it's hard to hear most of it, I missed some stuff.
Harris starts it out. Still can't tell which Johnson is which. Harris is sent into the corner then caught with a butterfly suplex, then a cover for two. Harris sent into the corner again, avoids a splash, ducks a couple elbows and delivers an arm drag. Harris sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline and a Thesz Press. Storm tags in, sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline and goes for a backslide but the Johnson avoids it. Storm ducks another clothesline and delivers a headscissor take down. Johnson sent off the ropes but catches Storm with a swinging neckbreaker.
Johnsons tag. Storm sent off the ropes into a double lift and drop. Stomps in the corner to Storm, then a gorilla press slam. Johnsons tag again. Suplex is countered by Storm, then his Irish whip is countered, hip toss into a neckbreaker. Johnsons tag. Storm sent off the ropes into a double shoulder block, cover for two. Storm face first in the corner. Stomps to Storm and Johnsons tag again. Storm sent of the ropes into a double back body drop. Scoop slam to Storm, then Johnson to the middle rope and Storm gets the boots up. Storm ducks a clothesline, inverted atomic drop and a superkick.
Harris gets the hot tag. Right to the Johnsons until he's nailed from behind. Storm eens it up and Cactus clotheslines the other Johnson to the floor. Harris with a spear. Harris sent to the corner, goes for a crossbody from the middle rope, caught, Storm with a dropkick from the top and Harris falls for the cover for the win in 4:43. An alright match.
Harris and Storm celebrate. Plumtree is pissed and berating the Johnsons, getting in their face, then they shove him to the mat and leave. Plumtree is distraught and crawls out of the ring.
Break
Scott Hall makes his way out. He gets his "heyo" in and then he's immediately interrupted by Jarrett. He says that no one wants to see or hear Hall and tells him to take his ass where he came from before calling him a bitch. Hall says Jarrett hasn't changed a lick, he talks a lot of smack but doesn't think he can back it up, before telling him to bring it. Jarrett starts to head down but he's intercepted by the NWA President and Jarrett backs off. K-Krush attacks Hall from behind, avoids the Razor's Edge but caught with the crossbody, then clotheslined out to the floor. Hall's music hits and Krush leaves. I'm not sure what the point of this was.
Goldilocks is in the back, apparently in the locker room. Storm and Harris are being tended to, then the camera pans over and one of them is a bloody mess on the floor Behrens calls for EMTs and kicks out Goldy.
Break
Anthony Ingram vs Monty Brown
Pre-Match: Brown oddly enough is coming out to what would be Abyss' theme song, except there's also lyrics added to it. He has a mic and gets a couple cheap pops, says there can only be one Alpha Male, and he's come to TNA for one reason, that being Shamrock and the NWA Title. He says he's about to show us how he's gonna get it.
Brown with a series of rights, then Ingram sent into the corner, caught with a t-bone suplex. More rights and clubs to the back, then Brown sent into the corner, catches Ingram off a splash and delivers a running powerslam. Brown with a fallaway slam into a falling powerbomb, something he calls the Alpha Bomb, for the win in 1:34.
Celebrating by Brown. Still to come, Shamrock defends against Malice.
Cut backstage to what we're told is supposed to be Goldy with the NWA President, but she's talking to security, because she can't find the president anywhere. She pulls aside... two guys I don't recognize, apparently they're the Hot Shots and asks if they've seen the president. They haven't, they walk away. She starts to apologize for not getting the interview and she's suddenly accosted by Puppet to do an interview, holding a kendo stick. He's upset that TEO and Hollywood took his limelight on the first show and he wants to make a midget bleed tonight. He calls Gary Coleman a has-been, then suggests he'll kick Mini-Me's ass for taking his money in the movie industry, then suggests they bring in the drunk midget Beetlejuice from Howard Stern as he's bringing up possible victims. He says he's not leaving until he beats some midget ass, and that's a promise.

NWA World Tag Team Championship Tournament Semi-Final Match: The Rainbow Express (w/ Joel Gertner) vs Buff Bagwell & Apolo
Pre-Match: After the Express come out, we cut backstage where Goldy is with Buff and Apolo. Apparently Buff is supposed to be the surprise entry, but he says he's a 6x tag champion with five different partners, and tonight he's going to make it 7 with six, which is why he went out and got the baddest, biggest, the #2 man in the business... because Buff is #1. Apolo says they're going to become the tag champions, then Buff cuts him off and repeats, tells us to watch and see because Buff Daddy is for real and coming straight at us with the #2 man.
Buff and Bruce start this out. Then Bruce and Lenny hug. Then a bit of back and fort until Bruce is hip tossed. Buff poses and gets attacked from behind, sent face first in the corner for some right hands, sent across the ring, then drops Bruce with an elbow before delivering a Vader Bomb. Alicia makes her way out now. Lenny tags in but gets poked in the eyes. Alicia heads over to Ferrara and he pays her some money. Way too much camera time here and it misses a tag from Apolo who delivers a double clothesline, then back to Alicia and Ferrara. I guess Bruce also tagged back in during all this because Apolo covers him, Lenny tries to break it up but ends up hitting Bruce with an elbow instead. Sitout spinebuster to Lenny for a cover for two, so I guess tags don't matter now?
Lenny gets his shots in, then Apolo with chops before deliver a scoop slam. He gets tripped up by Gertner coming off the ropes, then caught with a tornado DDT by Lenny, who covers for two. Bruce back in with boots in the corner and vicious rights, then Lenny back in, leapfrogs over Bruce to drop onto Apolo's back, then Bruce does the same over Lenny. Snapmare by Lenny and an elbow, then more rights and a leg drop, cover for two. Lenny sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline and caught with a full nelson slam.
Buff gets the hot tag, rights to both Lenny and Bruce, scoop slam to Bruce, clothesline to Lenny, swinging neckbreaker back to Bruce. Back body drop to Lenny, then tries to crossbody them both over the ropes and Lenny gets a knee up to block. Apolo comes in, Bruce sent off the ropes and caught with a hell of a superkick. TKO from Apolo, then Lenny attacks him from behind and low bridges him. Buff with the Blockbuster to Bruce, then a superkick from Lenny gets the win in 5:49. Alright, this wasn't half bad. I'm getting real tired of this Alicia stuff, particularly when the camera cuts away from the match to show it.
Express leave and celebrate. Buff realizes he screwed up after he spent most of the match showboating, then Apolo leaves as Buff sits on the apron. Ferrara walks over with a mic to give him a chance to speak. He doesn't want to be called Buff anymore, he wants to be called by his real name Marcus, because his entire career has been Buff, and all he got with that was a broken neck that he came back from and no one gave a shit about, he's a 6x tag champion and he just got beat by two gay guys (his words). He wants to be called Marcus forever and he wants to go home, he's done/.Then he leaves to some "na na na na goodbye".
Break
Shamrock makes his way out with a mic. He's confused about what's going on and brings up Monty Brown, he doesn't care where he's from, he takes offense to the fact that he's wanting a title shot after only one match in the company. He had to go through 19 guys to get his title and says Monty needs to be careful what he wishes for because he might have a short career in the NWA.
That brings him to his title defense tonight against Malice, and his defense against a Japanese punk last week. And after he's done taking that guy apart, if Monty is so unlucky and happens to get a title shot he'll be happy to step in the ring, beat him down, and send him home with his head shoved up his ass.
Minister Mitchell appears somewhere in the crowd as the lights go down, and a spotlight shines on him. He says Shamrock doesn't need to concern himself with Monty Brown, or worry about Omori, but he does need to fear Malice. As the lights come back on, Shamrock has been laid out on the ramp and standing over him is Malice. Lights go back out as Malice leaves and Mitchell grins, while security and EMTs check on Shamrock, putting a brace around his neck.
Goldy is backstage to try and get a word with Bill Behrens about everything going on tonight, who's on the phone with someone. Jerry Lynn is also there, and says he'll find himself a partner to replace Harris and Storm. He blows him off saying he doesn't have time to deal with this and also sends Goldy away.

Hardcore Midget Match: Puppet the Psycho Dwarf vs Todd Stone
Pre-Match: Looks like there are some weapons set at ringside, or at the very least a trash can and lid, as Puppet tosses them in the ring along with his kendo stick. He takes the mic from Borash, says there's been midgets doing their flippy-dippy stuff and didn't have the "Midget Killer" killing midgets. All he needs is a midget in the ring right now, repeats that he wants midget blood tonight.
Immediately Puppet is wailing on him with the kendo stick. Then he grabs the trash can and nails him in the head. Todd sent off the ropes into a clothesline. Trash can to the back, then as scoop slam onto the trash can. Puppet puts Todd into the can and nails him in the back, then the front repeatedly with the stick. Todd sent off the ropes into a TKO type move onto the trash can for the win in 1:56.
Puppet whacks the ref with the stick and he leaves. Then he nails Borash as he tries to enter the ring. Then he nails Don West repeatedly with it and chases the ref to the back. OK, this is stupid but I kinda like Puppet. Not a bit of midget blood though.
Back to Goldy backstage, while the EMTs are working on Shamrock. No update from EMTs at all and Shamrock tries to leave.
Break
Highlights of last week's battle royal, specifically what Francine did.
So Taylor Vaughn and Francine are supposed to have a match. They make their way out. Francine pulls a strap from her boot before the match starts and begins whipping Taylor with it, then chokes her with it, then whips her some more until the ref takes the strap away. Then Taylor takes it and starts whipping her and choking her. Then she whips the ref until he takes it away, calls for the bell and awards the match to Francine via DQ. The ref sends her to the back, and Ferrara leaves commentary to help Francine up, handing her the strap and raises her arm in victory. Then she places his hand on her breast so she can start whipping him. Worth it. Francine leaves. There was no opening bell and we get a DQ that makes no sense. Between this and the Buff promo earlier, Russo is in full effect on this show.
Borash brings out Hermie Sadler for an interview, he's brought his pit crew. He puts over TNA and the crowd in Huntsville, then gets a cheap pop from the Nashville fans. Once again it's interrupted by K-Krush, thank god. Like he said two weeks ago, he doesn't want to hear a damn thing about NASCAR drivers. Security also come out. He doesn't care about racecar drivers and neither do the idiot fans, then picks a fight with Hermie, who tackles and lays into him a bit until they're pulled apart. K-Krush challenges him to a match for next week and Hermie accepts. They make their separate ways to the back.
Break
NWA World Heavyweight Championship: Malice (w/ Father James Mitchell) vs Ken Shamrock (c)
Malice right on the attack as Shamrock enters the ring, hen twists his neck around the top rope., then a second time dropping Shamrock to the floor. Shamrock face first off the guard rail, then Malice chokes him with his boot. Shamrock rolls into the apron, though his neck is cranked back across the apron before Malice slides back in. More choking with his boot. Shamrock dropped throat first on the top rope. Hard right by Malice before choking him over the middle rope. Malice with a headlock hangs Shamrock from the middle rope before dropping him to the mat. Snapmare, then off the ropes with a leg drop, Malice covers for two.
Shamrock catches him with an armbar attempt but Malice stomps his way out before he can pull him to the mat. More choking over the middle rope before tossing him back to the floor. Shamrock face first off the announce table, then a dragon sleeper only to release it immediately. Malice breaks the count only to toss Shamrock back in. Clubs to the back of Shamrock's neck. Shamrock gets him in a kneebar but Malice makes it to the ropes, and he no sells it anyways. Back suplex by Malice, then a second. More neck twisting around the top rope. Shamrock blocks a suplex and hits a snap suplex. Malice back to his feet immediately, Shamrock counters an Irish whip into a belly to belly suplex, covers, Malice kicks right out at three and Shamrock retains in 5:55. Yeah this was not good.
Shamrock immediately rolls out of the ring as Malice pops back up. Shamrock heads to the back clutching his neck. So Shamrock vs Omori for the title is set for next week.
Break
NWA X Championship: David Young (w/ Bobcat) vs AJ Styles (c)
Pre-Match: Tenay mentions Alex Marvez here, future AEW interviewer, I had no idea he was a column writer, says he writes one of he most widely read columns in the country. Apparently last week's X Division tournament was the best thing he'd seen on PPV that year.
David gets in a cheap shot right at the start, then hammers away with more rights. AJ sent off the ropes, flips over his back and delivers forearms. David sent off the ropes into a dropkick. AJ counters a full nelson slam with an arm drag, then another arm drag. David sent off the ropes, ducks each other's clotheslines, then turns AJ inside out with a shoulder block. David wastes time taunting the crowd and it allows AJ to head scissor him out of the ring. AJ saves himself with a handspring as David nearly catches him off a dive, then... well David is out of place when AJ somersaults over, but he lands on his feet and nails a forearm to save the spot. Back in the ring, AJ covers for two.
David blocks a suplex and tries one of his own, but AJ escapes, then sends David off the ropes, he's sent out to the apron, tries to springboard but David cuts his legs out, AJ throat first across the top rope and a nasty landing on the floor. David with a springboard moonsault takes out AJ as he gets back up. Back in the ring, David covers for two. AJ sent off the ropes, avoids a German suplex, misses an elbow and they trade waistlocks until AJ's sent into the corner with a Northern Lights suplex, hanging him upside down in the tree of woe until he drops on the back of his head. David folds him up for two.
AJ gets whipped into the corner during a replay, then AJ sent off the ropes, catches David with a crucifix roll up for two, then another roll up for two. AJ misses a roundhouse, then David drops him to a knee and nails a step-up enziguri, covers for two. Snapmare to AJ into a neckscissor, then David transitions to a headlock for some reason. AJ fights out, off the ropes into a snap slam, David covers for two. David with a brainbuster and a cover but AJ kicks out. Back to a side headlock for David. AJ fights out, off the ropes, ducks a clothesline and nails a superkick. AJ covers for a near fall. AJ sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline, springboard moonsault and they nearly botch his transition into the inverted DDT, but manages to pull it off. AJ covers but it only gets two.
David sent off the ropes into a back body drop, then AJ sent off the ropes, ducks an elbow, series of kicks and a chop drops David. David sent off the ropes again, ducks a leapfrog, gets him in a full nelson only to spin him around into a smooth spinebuster. David covers but it only gets two. The spinerbusters are supposed to be this guy's finisher but Apolo and now AJ have kicked out of it like they're nothing. AJ set onto the top rope and David goes for a Frankensteiner, but AJ blocks and hits the Styles Clash from the middle rope to retain in 8:47. A much better showing for David than last week in a good match. Also Bobcat spent the whole match on her phone but it never played into anything.
Bobcat joins David back in the ring and once again celebrates as if he won. AJ shoves her aside to celebrate. Then she goes right back to it. And she's back on her cellphone too. At least they spent as little focus as possible on her during the match.

Goldy is backstage with the Rainbow Express. Lenny says they're not interested in here, but they know of a place where they can get that mop of hers fixed. She turns to Gertner and brings up what happened to Storm and Harris, and he says he didn't hear a word she said, because he was taken aback by her beauty. He asks why life has to be so complicated, like his toys getting confiscated at the airport. She asks who his team is going to wrestle tonight. He says that since every team has either been beaten or unable to compete, the Express get the night off and the tag titles. He also suggests he wrestle her, with a go behind, or belly to back. He continues on and says they're not going out for a confrontation, they're going out for a coronation, because it's his interpretation that the NWA rules and regulations state that if the tag teams have all been beat or are unable to compete, they're the champions. He says Harris and Storm may have slipped in the back door last week, but in the end, they're the champions. Then he kisses Goldy and they leave.
Tournament Finals for the Vacated NWA World Tag Team Championships: The Rainbow Express (w/ Joel Gertner) vs Jerry Lynn & AJ Styles (NWA X Champion)

We go to a highlight package of K-Krush and Christopher's match last week, then Jarrett's match with Hall earlier in that show. Which brings us to the main event.
K-Krush & Jeff Jarrett vs Scott Hall & Brian Christopher
All four go at it and take it to the floor. Hall and Christopher take control, with Hall and Jarrett going into the crowd, followed by Brian and Krush. Jarrett goes face first into a dancer's cage, then he and Hall start fighting inside it with Hall pummeling him. All four start to head back toward the ringside area. Christopher and Krush return to the ring as Jarrett goes face first into the announce table, back body drop to K-Krush and a big boot. Brian goes up top but misses the Hip Hop Drop before being tossed back out.
Hall enters the ring and sends Krush off the ropes, blocks a hip toss and delivers a chokeslam. Jarrett comes in from behind with some rights, then Hall counters an Irish whip, Jarrett through the legs into a right. Jarrett sent to the corner, goes up and over and hammers away at Hall. Jarrett sent across the ring for a clothesline and Brian tags in. Mounted punches in the corner to Jarrett, then wastes time played to the crowd, missing a splash in the process and eating the turnbuckles. Hall tags in, drops Krush from the apron, then he's sent off the ropes by Jarrett knocking Brian off the apron in the process. Hall and Jarrett bonk heads on the rebound. Krush tags in, goes up top and hits a missile dropkick. Krush flips off the crowd, then a corkscrew club to the back coming off the ropes, covers for two.

Hall sent off the ropes into a corkscrew heel kick, then Krush covers for two. Jarrett back in again, goes up top with a crossbody, but Hall rolls through into a cover for two. Hall reverses only to be caught with a jawbreaker and a back suplex. Krush creates a distraction as Hall tries to make a tag, but Brian is busy with the ref. Krush pulls Hall from the corner to deliver the axe kick. Krush applies a chinlock. Hall rises to his feet to hit the electric chair. Jarrett gets the tag, then Hall sent off the ropes, ducks a double clothesline and hits one of his own.
Hall finally makes it to his corner to make the hot tag, but Brian pulls his hand away at the last second, decking Hall with a right hand. Hall catches Jarett with an atomic drop which sends him into the referee, then rights to Krush and Jarrett, then one for Brian. More rights as Brian goes up top, only to be thrown to his back Brian sent off the ropes, popped up and dropped on his ass. Razor's Edge to Krush. Jarrett is back up. Hall sent off the ropes, tries the Edge on Jarrett only to be booted by Brian. Stroke by Jarrett, then Brian goes up top with the Hip Hop Drop. Jarrett covers for the win in 11:43. I was actually enjoying this match until the last few minutes became overbooked.
Jarrett celebrates in the corners as Krush and Brian embrace. Jarrett gets a mic and tells Hall he proved his point tonight, that Hall ain't worth a shit. He says he beat Hall's ass in '95, '97, ran his ass out of WCW, the boys up north ran him out of WWF, and he's going going to single-handedly run Hall out of the NWA. Cheap boot to the ribs and another right knocks Hall out to the floor. Jeff takes the mic again and says Hall is just like all the other legends in the NWA, he ain't worth a damn. He tells Tenay to bring that to the NWA president, Harley Race and Dory Funk. Then he takes that trophy Tenay got at the top of the show and smashes it over the back of Hall's head, then over the ribs. The ref pulls him off and calls for help and EMTs, as more refs rush out.
Jarrett keeps talking, says he'll put Toby Keith on a stretcher too if he comes out, plus Sterling Marlin. He threatens to wipe the Tennessee Titans' entire offensive line, because they're sitting front row. He repeats he's gonna run Hall out if it's the last thing he does. Hall is loaded on a stretcher and Jarrett drops an elbow from the apron. Jarrett keeps going. He says he got screwed the first night of TNA, and he'll be damned if he's ever gonna let it happen again. Hall is loaded back on the stretcher and carted off. Jarrett dumps him off again in the aisle off the ramp to the floor. Jarrett says he'll prove once and for all that he should've walked out the NWA Champion on the premiere episode and finally leaves.
Back over to commentary to run down what's on tap for next week's episode so far: Shamrock defends the NWA Championship against Omori, a rankings match with six X Division wrestlers with the Flying Elvises, plus Hermie Sadler vs K-Krush. Jarrett comes back out to keep beating down Hall. He slams the metal stretcher down on him to end the show.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Let's see: Dumb gimmick? Check. Sorta shoot promo? Check. Finish that makes no sense? Check. Overbooked finish? Check. Long-winded Jarrett promo? Check. Swerve? Check. Matches all starting with brawls or the heel getting the jump on the babyface? Check. Don't get me wrong, this was a fun episode for the most part, but this had all the Russo trademarks, in just about every segment. The only parts that were crap were the NWA Title match and the continued thing with Alicia, whatever the hell it's supposed to be. With a run time of 1:56:20, this show had a total 52:56 of wrestling.
