NWA-TNA Weekly PPV #1 (June 19, 2002)

Emanating from the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama for the first episode of NWA-TNA. Doing ring announcing for the evening is Jeremy Borash who introduces the commentators. Out first is Don West who hypes up the crowd a bit in a Hawaiian shirt. He introduces Ed Ferrara who will join himself and Mike Tenay, who's already at the commentary booth.
Tenay welcomes us to the show who says it's all about Total Nonstrop Action, an evening that revolves around history on so many fronts. He says they'll be respecting history, the legends of the NWA are in attendance, like Harley Race, Dory Funk Jr. and Ricky Steamboat. He also mentions they'll be making history in crowning an NWA World Heavyweight Champion in what's being called the Gauntlet for the Gold, which starts as a Royal Rumble until it gets to the final two, where it's one fall to a finish.

Back over to Borash to bring out the mentioned NWA legends: the former 8x NWA World Heavyweight Champion "Handsome" Harley Race; a former NWA Tag and World Champion, Dory Funk Jr.; he is the original "Fabulous One" Jackie Fargo, who Tenay touts as being a first ballot Wrestling Observer Hall of Famer for some odd reason; he is the father of one of the greatest wrestling families of all time, "Bullet" Bob Armstrong; the first couple of the NWA Corsica Joe and Sarah Lee; he is a Senior Vice President of the NWA, Bill Behrens; and he is a former NWA World Champion, a former 6x NWA World Tag Team Champion with over 6000 matches spanning a spectacular 20 year career, Ricky Steamboat, who comes out with the NWA Title.
Ricky gets the mic and thanks the fans around the world watching the PPV, says it gives him great pleasure to stand in the ring as he recalls the many times he was in the ring, particularly the one night with Flair in Chicago, 1989, becoming NWA Champion. He says the belt means more to him and the people behind him than any title he's held in his life. He says the belt, to them and the business, is what the Stanley Cup is to hockey players, like the Super Bowl to football players, the World Series to baseball players. He says that 20 have been selected by the representatives to compete in the Gauntlet, and they've chosen him to act as referee when it comes down to the final two.
Cue Jeff Jarrett. He calls the Gauntlet the biggest bunch of crap he's ever heard in his life. He makes fun of how Dory is and complains about how Dory and Ricky never had to win a stupid battle royal to win their titles and calls it the biggest joke of the NWA Title he's ever witnessed. Fargo starts talking over him and tells him to kiss his ass and we get a Fargo Strut and since Jarrett wants to run his mouth, Fargo does him an honor and makes him #1 in the Gauntlet. Jarrett's fine with it because he's going to proceed to kick 19 other asses and walk out the new NWA Champion.
Cue Ken Shamrock, who agrees with Jarrett about how this Gauntlet sucks, but while Jarrett might kick 18 other asses in the ring he ain't whipping #19 in Shamrock.
Cut Scott Hall who appears in the crowd who gives the ol' "Hey yo". He also agrees with Jarrett and Shamrock but tells them to quit crying about it because it's gonna happen anyways. He doesn't know if it's 18 or 19 they have have to beat up, but says they should just focus on beating up one, that being himself. Jarrett tells everyone to stick it and says Fargo will regret this day as long as he lives. Jarrett heads to the back. Alright nice little opening segment to start things off.

We cut to Goldilocks, the backstage interviewer for TNA, who's with the original midget killer, Puppet the Psycho Dwarf. He wants to start the show off with midgets because midgets are the true stars of the country. He says the day he came out of his momma, the nurses and the doctors just stopped and stared, when he was a little child weeble wobbling down the street everybody stopped and stared, and now TNA brings him to Huntsville and brings up two other midgets and he wants to see some midget blood. Jarrett walks by throwing a tantrum.

AJ Styles, Low Ki & Jerry Lynn vs The Flying Elvises (Jorge Estrada, Sonny Siaki & Jimmy Yang)
20 min time limit.
We have AJ, Ki and Lynn offering handshakes only for the Elvises to decline, then attack from behind as their backs are turned. AJ and co are all sent off the ropes, duck clotheslines, Lynn and Ko hit dropkicks while AJ delivers a hurricanrana on the Elvises. Two of them roll out to the floor while Lynn goes up top, Ki with a suicide dive and Lynn with a crossbody taking one out each. Back in the ring, AJ sends Yang off the ropes, he ducks a clothesline, AJ leapfrogs and delivers a snap slam. AJ sent off the ropes, popped and dropped down, then Yang connects with a running knee. Tenay also announces a round robin tournament to crown the first X-Division Champion on the next show. Yang covers for two. Back suplex is countered with a forearm by AJ who then tags in Lynn. Yang sent off the ropes into a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, then a cover for two. Lynn sent into the corner, gets a boot up and delivers a tornado DDT, only for Yang to pop up to his feet and connect with an enziguri. Lynn sent into the Elvis corner and Siaki tags in, sent off the ropes only to drop to the mat and deliver a right. Lynn avoids a front flip leg drop, then sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline to deliver a headscissor. Lynn sent off the ropes, counters an armdrag with a wheelbarrow bulldog, then covers for two.
Ki tags in. Siaki counters an Irish whip, delivers an uppercut ad delivers a spinning neckbreaker, covers for two. Ki face first in the corner, sent across the ring, connects with a side kick but misses a big boot. Siaki with a backbreaker over the shoulder and a cover for two.Jorge makes the tag. Samoan drop from Siaki, then a split-legged moonsault from Jorge and a cover for two. Ki set on the top rope, a draping hangman's neckbreaker from Siaki and a standing shooting star for a cover and two. Ki sent off the ropes, through the legs and a dropkick to the knees. Kicks to the chest and the side of the head.
AJ gets the tag as does Yang, who misses a spin kick, AJ misses a roundhouse and sent off the ropes, turns Yang inside out with a forearm. AJ sent off the ropes, springboard moonsault into a reverse DDT and a cover for two. Yang lands on his feet off a German suplex and nails a nasty spinning heel kick, covers and Low Ki breaks it up. Ki sent off the ropes, hangs on, Yang sent over to the apron only to be knocked off with a rolling heel kick. Jorge comes in and Ki's sent off the ropes, goes for a hurricanrana but gets turned into a sitout powerbomb, but Lynn breaks it up. Cradle piledriver by Lynn, then Siaki comes in with a fisherman's neckbreaker to Lynn. AJ with a kick to the side of the head. AJ is driven into the corner by Yang and Ki accidentally nails him with a cartwheel kick to the side of the head. Yang off the top with a missile dropkick to the back of Ki's head, then he goes up top for a corkscrew moonsault, or what he calls Yang Time, for the win in 6:28. God damn that was phenomenal.

Midget Match: Hollywood vs TEO
Pre-Match: That's how this match was announced, a midget match.
Hollywood attacks from behind while Teo's playing to the crowd in the corner, then Hollywood sent off the ropes and they botch a tilt-a-whirl headscissor. Hollywood chopped in the corner and dropped down for a elbow drop low blow. Hollywood in the corner for mounted rights and he flops to the mat. Teo sent into the corner, tries to go up and over but caught with a running powerslam, covers for two. Roll up by Teo as Hollywood argues with the ref for two. Clothesline by Hollywood then goes to the top rope for a frog splash that he nearly misses and covers but it only gets two. Teo face first in the corner, then counters an Irish whip to deliver rights. Side Russian leg sweep by Teo before going up top for I guess is supposed to be a Swanton from what Tenay says but he lands on Hollywood's head for the win in 2:51. I mean it was short at least.

Tenay plugs the website.

Ferrara and West are in the ring now to give a sneak peak of next week's Lingerie Battle Royal, and out come the ladies: ECW's Francine, Miss Joni, Shannon (the former Daffney), Alexis Laree (Mickie James), Baltimore Ravens cheerleader Erin, ECW's Elektra, Taylor Vaugahan (the former B.B. in WWF), Miss Sasha and Tyler. Apparently this Battle Royal is to crown a Miss TNA.
Francine gets the mic and calls West pudgy, then says the other women don't deserve to be in the ring because they can't compare to her. She reminds us she's the Queen of Extreme and asks what any of them have done for the business. Elektra gets the other mic and asks who deemed her Queen of Extreme and says they're in a new company now, there's no Extreme in the title, then says she single-handedly bankrupted another company. Of course they break out into a catfight and Elektra got her top torn and West covers up. Francine says she's going to do the same to the rest of them because no one's going to see her in her lingerie and will be crowned Miss TNA. Then she leaves as Ed and Don hold back Elektra.

Back to Goldilocks who's backstage with a man named Mortimer Plumtree, who takes the mic before she says much else. He talks about a life filled with torment, leading to pain, leading to will, leading to power, power allowing him to bring his tag team who, in their formative years were his tormentors are now his servants. He says they do what he tells them, when he tells them to do it, they wear what he tells them to without questioning, for they know that they owe him their freedom, their livelihoods, their very lives. He says they don't speak unless he allows them to, they listen only to him, and now he calls upon them to once and for all make their presence known in TNA, rewriting the history books of the sport. He gives to us... The Johnsons. Oh fucking hell.

The Johnsons (Richard & Rod) (w/ Mortimer Plumtree) vs Psicosis & "Cowboy" James Storm
Pre-Match: The Johnsons of course made to look like penises, because comedy I guess.
Psicosis starts this one out with... I don't know who's who, and neither do commentary, so I'm gonna call them Dick 1 and Dick 2. Psicosis shoved into the corner off a lock up, then sent across the ring for a clothesline, then a butterfly suplex into a cover for two. Snap suplex by Dick 1 and another cover for two. Psicosis sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline and an elbow and hits a spinning heel kick. Dick 2 comes in and gets an enziguri. Storm tags in, Dick 2 sent off the ropes and Storm with a missile dropkick from the top sends him to the floor. Dick 1 sent off the ropes but he hangs on and slides out of the ring.
The former Ryan Shamrock comes out, now going by the name Alicia as a Johnson re-enters the ring with Storm. Cheap shot to Storm, then a wrist lock into an arm drag. Storm sent over the ropes and skins the cat, before being sent off the ropes again and connects with a wheelbarrow bulldog. Psicosis back in with a dropkick to the face. Psicosis sent off the ropes and the Dick on the apron pulls him down by the hair. Psicosis sent off the ropes into a double flapjack. Psisosis sent into the corners back and forth, then an exploder suplex. Dicks tag. Psicosis sent off the ropes into a double clothesline. Psicosis counters a powerbomb with a facebuster.
Storm and the Dicks tag. Storm delivers rights to both, off the ropes and a hurricanrana to one. Johnsons counter Irish whips and whip them into each other, belly to belly suplexes from the Johnsons. Storm sent off the ropes and goes for a roll up for one. Storm to the middle rope, tries a tornado DDT but gets shoved off, ducks a clothesline, tripped up by Mortimer as he comes off the ropes and caught with a TKO for the win in 4:52. I mean what is there to even say here? Commentary spend the match making dick jokes and you can't take this shit seriously.

Mortimer raises their hands as he shoos the ref away. Alicia apparently was here for the referee  and he gives her money for some reason. They both leave to the back.

Back to Goldilocks who bumps into a couple of hillbilly looking guys. They introduce her to their girlfriend and I coulda sworn they said she was their cousin two and go to drink beer, until someone comes in to say they can't. Goldilocks leaves disgusted.

Back to the ring, JB introduces the 1993 Bush Series Rookie of the Year Hermie Sadler, and the then NASCAR Winston Cup points leader Sterling Marlin. They promote Sterling's next race, but they're soon interrupted by K-Krush, the former K-Kwik and future R-Truth. He's sick and tired of hearing about some racecar drivers and says they have no business inside a pro wrestling ring. He says he's an athlete and his kind are athletes, and their kind drive a car around a circle in a left motion continuously, His kind dunks basketballs, throw touchdowns, run for touchdowns, do arm drops, leg drops, and says his grandma can do what they do. Hermie gets the mic and makes fun of how Krush is dressed and gets a cheap pop.
He dams them and Alabama and is about to introduce them to pro wrestling until Brian Christopher runs out. He lays into Krush and delivers an inverted atomic drop, plus a super kick. Hermie and Sterling toss him out to the floor. Brian gets the mic and challenges Krush to a match for next week's show, and he'll have Sterling and Hermie in his corner. Krush accepts as security hold him back.

Jarrett has Jackie Fargo by the throat backstage until refs pull them apart.

Christian York & Joey Matthews vs The Dupps (Bo & Stan) (w/ Fluff Dupp)
Pre-Match: Joey the future Joey Mercury.
The Dupps attack from behind and double team Joey as Christian rolls out to the floor. Joey sent off the ropes into a double flapjack. Joey sent off the ropes, ducks a double clothesline as York delivers a springboard double dropkick to the Dupps. York with rights and Stan sends him off the ropes, as Joey tags in, York ducks a clothesline and they deliver a double suplex, Joey covers for two. Joey caught with a full nelson slam and Bo tags in. Slaps to the face and a right, then Joey fights back, tries to Irish whip but Bo won't move and Joey runs into a big boot, then a standing frog splash into a cover for two. Stan back in with rights in the corner, Joey sent across the ring, Stan goes for a swinging neckbreaker but he's caught as Joey tries for a backslide. Stan tries to deliver a right but Joey ducks and delivers a neckbreaker of his own.
York gets the tag as does Bo. York off the ropes with a laariat, then a clothesline to Stan, sent off the ropes by Bo, goes for a sunset flip and Bo tries to drop on him but York moves out of the way. Mounted rights are cut off by Stan and he's caught with a back elbow from the middle rope. Fireman's carry slam and a seated senton from York, then a cover for two. York sent off the ropes, kick to Stan and Joey crossbodies them both out to the floor. Tornado DDT by York to Bo, then he goes up top. Ref is busy with the other two as York goes up top and Fluff cuts his legs out from under him, Bo rolls him up with a handful of tights for the win in 3:43. I hate the gimmick but they're alright in the ring, it was a fine match. The constant puns from commentary I could have done without though.

We get a look at a Toby Keith music video, then we get a live performance from the man himself and I have never been more happy for Jarrett to interrupt something. Jarrett is followed by security and referees as he goes to the ring and Toby wants a piece of him. Jarrett gets a mic and says that no one wants to hear him sing or his damn song and tells him to take his Angry American ass out of there. Toby tries to get to the ring but he's held back and Jarrett wants to get to the main event. Toby heads to the back.

Gauntlet for the Gold for the Vacated NWA World Heavyweight Championship (Part 1): Ken Shamrock, Scott Hall, Jeff Jarrett and 17 others TBA
Jeff Jarrett starts at #1.
Pre-Match: So reading up on things, the title was stripped from then-champion Dan Severn because he wasn't able to defend due to a previously booked MMA fight, so we're guaranteed a new champion tonight. As said earlier, this will start like a Royal Rumble, with entrants coming out every 90 seconds. Once it comes down to two, it's one fall to a finish.
We don't even wait for JB to finish announcing the rules as we get to entrant #2, Buff Bagwell. Jarrett sent off the ropes, boot to the gut and a swinging neckbreaker by Buff. Buff sent off the ropes, blocks a hip toss and hits a clothesline. Buff tosses Jarrett over but he hangs on. Buf goes to clothesline him out but he's backdropped over to the floor for our first elimination.

Lash sent into the guard rail, then dropped face first onto it. Back in the ring, Jarrett with The Stroke before tossing Lash out for another elimination.
Entrant #4 is Screamin' Norman Smiley. Jarrett immediately on the attack, then sent off the ropes, Norman leapfrogs, then stops Jarrett to do the Big Wiggle. Jarrett just clotheslines him. Norman face first in the corner, then sends Jarrett off the ropes for his swinging scoop slam. Norman gets behind to wiggle only to get a low blow and tossed out, and he seems to land awkwardly on his leg.
Entrant #5 is Apollo, Tenay tells us he's a former IWA World and Tag Champion. and a former basketball player in Puerto Rico. Jarrett attacks immediately. Apollo counters an Irish whip into a sitout spinebuster, then some clotheslines. Apollo sent off the ropes, blocks a hip toss and hits a neckbreaker. He tosses Jarrett over but he catches hold of the middle rope to save himself. Jarrett goes through the middle rope and Apollo lays into him with boots, then Jarrett face first in the corner.

Jarrett joins back in on the attack with mounted rights in the corner, then Krush with some mounted rights. They try to eliminate him but he hangs on, then send him off the ropes only to be caught with a double clothesline.
Entrant #7, accompanied by James Mitchell, is Slash, who was half of a tag team PG-13 in ECW as Wolfie D. Slash misses a clothesline to Apollo, then Apollo blocks a hip toss and hits a clothesline. Slash sent off the ropes into a back body drop. Apollo sent off the ropes and catches Slash with a swinging DDT. Apollo goes to press slam Slash out of the ring but Jarrett nails him from behind. Jarrett with a suplex to Apollo, then Slash with a series of elbow drops.
Entrant #8 is Del Rios, the former Phantasio. He goes at it with Jarrett then goes after Slash, only to be cornered by Jarrett and Slash. Both choke Rios, then he goes for a belly to belly on Slash but Slash gets out by biting him. Slash with shots in the corner as Jarrett tries to eliminate Apollo. Rios with a belly to belly to Slash, then goes after Jarrett until Slash nails him from behind.
Entrant #9 is Justice, the future Abyss. He goes after Apollo, sends him off the ropes into a big boot. Jarrett sent off the ropes by Justice into a big boot too. Slash with an inverted DDT to Del Rios
Entrant #10 is Konnan, sends Jarrett off the ropes into a clothesline, then Slash off the ropes into a clothesline, then Rios off the ropes into a rolling clothesline. Konnan sends Justice off the ropes and gets him with the rolling clothesline but he doesn't go down, follows with the facebuster. He goes after Jarrett until Slash attacks from behind. Jarrett again tries to eliminate Apollo to no avail.
Entrant #11 is... Well out comes Joel Gertner who says he chases anything in a skirt and gets up into that dress, he'll be with five girls in Huntsville because he doesn't settle for less, he's going to tear up the hotel room and make the bedsheets a mess, but first he has business with the Rainbow Express. He introduces Bruce, the former Kwee-Wee, who comes out with his partner Lenny Lane. He goes after Apollo, only to be sent off the ropes into a clothesline.
Entrant #12 is Rick Steiner. Clotheslines to Slash, Jarrett, Justice and Bruce. Rios sent off the ropes into a clothesline. Slash is t-boned over the ropes to the floor. Justice sends Rick off the ropes only to be caught with a slam and clotheslined out to the floor. Steiner sent off the ropes and catches Jarrett with a back body drop.
Entrant #13 is Malice, another one of James Mitchell's disciples and formerly The Wall and Sgt. AWOL. Chokeslam to Rios, then Bruce, then Konnan... well sorta they botch it. Then Krush. Then he eliminates Bruce, then Krush, then Rios, then Konnan. Rick attacks from behind now only to be low bridged and Steiner's out now.
Entrant #14 is Scott Hall as Apollo skins the cat. He goes up top as Hall delivers rights to Jarrett and Malice. Apollo drops from the top rope  and goes after Malice, sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline and nails a super kick. Jarrett sent off the ropes by Hall and caught with the Razor's Edge. Malice tries to eliminate Apollo in the corner.
Entrant #15 is... well Toby Keith comes out He goes right to Jarrett with a stalling suplex, then tosses Jarrett out with Hall's help. Toby leaves. Harris sent off the ropes into a double clothesline from Vampire and Devon.
Entry #18 is Steve Corino, a former NWA World Champion. Devon and Vampire go at it ad double clotheslined by Corino. Running knee in the corner to Harris. Vampire with rights to Corino who fights back with some of his own. Malice is nearly eliminated but Mitchell makes the save. Hall hung up on the top rope by Devon, then a jawbreaker and a superkick to the chest.
Entry #19 is Ken Shamrock. Roundhouse to Corinno, one to Devon, snap slam to Harris. Jumping knee to Malice, and a second is caught and Shamrock is powerbombed to the mat by Malice. Harris nearly eliminated by Vampire but he hangs on. He hammers away at Vampire in the corner and tries to eliminate him next.
Entry #20 is Brian Christopher to finish off the participants. He and Harris go at it until Harris is tossed out, then low bridges Harris and back body drops Vampire out. Corino with rights, then Brian with rights, ducks a clothesline and clotheslines Corino out. Malice with a chokeslam to Brian. Everyone stares down Malice, but then Shamrock kicks Brian and tosses him out, and we're down to four. Hall with rights as Shamrock stays back, Hall calls for the Razor's Edge only to be back dropped to the floor, leaving Shamrock and Malice. We're clocking in at 30:56 here.

Gauntlet for the Gold for the Vacated NWA World Heavyweight Championship (Part 2): Ken Shamrock vs Malice
Ricky Steamboat as special guest referee. Must be a winner.
Shamrock runs right into a big boot. Boot to the back of the head. Shamrock with some rights until Malice thumbs the eye. Shamrock sent off the ropes into a sidewalk slam, then a cover for two. Suplex by Malice and a cover for two. Shamrock face first in the corner, then sent off the ropes, goes for a sunset flip but cut off with a right hand. Shamrock with body shots until his eyes are raked, then sent off the ropes, ducks a back elbow, caught with the chokeslam only for Shamrock to counter with the cross-armbreaker midair. Malice manages to make it to the ropes with help from Mitchell.
Boots from Malice and a headbutt, a vicious uppercut, then Shamrock sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline, catches a big boot and applies the ankle lock. Malice makes it to the ropes again only to be pulled away. Malice hangs on and manages to get to the ropes a second time. Shamrock refuses to break the hold even to the count of five until Steamboat forces a break and gets in his face. Kicks to the bad ankle by Shamrock, then chokes him over the top rope. Malice sent across the ring, gets a boot up, goes for the chokeslam, Shamrock breaks his grip, delivers a belly to belly for the win in 5:48. Well Malice is still about as limited as he was in WCW but he did well for his role here. The first part of the match was OK but it really dragged in some parts. Shamrock was the right way to go here for the company's first champion though, obviously so they did something right at least.

Pyro goes off as Shamrock celebrates. He shakes hands with he NWA legends while we go to commentary to put over Shamrock's win... well sorta. Ferrara: "You wanna get in a fight with these two guys, it's like running in the Special Olympics, even if you win you gotta be retarded." Tenay dumbfounded by this.

Tenay talks about how historic the night was as we cut backstage to Jarrett, Toby Keith and Jackie Fargo arguing as security hold back the latter two. Jarrett comes out with a mic and gripes about the World Title being decided in a battle royal and he goes right for Dory, Harley and Bullet. Jarrett clocks Bullet with a right before walking away. Out comes Fargo, Keith and security. Fargo starts spouting off on the mic and promises to have someone whoop Jarrett's ass on the next show, that being Hall.

Out comes Hall and Jarrett meets him in the aisle, they go at it as the show goes off the air.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Well... as a first episode for a brand new company, this was a mixed bag. They showcased their X-Division damn well in the first match, and the main event wasn't a complete bust but it certainly wasn't great. Shamrock is a good start though. Then there's the Johnsons and the Dupps, though I think the Johnsons don't last past this episode so that's at least a good thing. So we'll see if they improve I guess. With a run time of 1:46:36, there was a total 53:52 of wrestling.
